In the 8 years I have been living here if I have my window open I can hear, several times an hour, either:

a) a helicopter

b) a police siren

c) an ambulance siren

d) similar

If people will insist on starting a thread EVERY TIME they see/hear one of the above the place will be destroyed. Show some restraint people! If you don't find out what THAT one was about there will be another along in a minute

If it's not on your road, trust me it will be on SOME road

It won't be that interesting

We can't just bury our heads in the sand. These threads serve a purpose - they keep us all informed of what is going on in our community. We can only spot trends and anticipate problems by being well informed in a timely manner. What other medium or agency is better suited to do this?
Sean - I think the majority of such threads actually help put into perspective how little serious crime there is in East Dulwich. For instance, if crime is that bad would so much outrage have been posted in response to the recent stealing of second hands clothes dumped outside a charity shop?

Jimmy! A HG Wells fan! Who knew eh...

As for some of the other comments

If people weren't calling for fairly sever legislation on other threads I might be able to ignore them more easily and agree with statements like "these crimes don't make us scared"

S - I dont think that people are putting up a thread every time they hear a siren..

To be honest if someone gets stabbed, killed or mugged (or whatever) then I would like to be informed.. Its not about scaremongering it is just about giving people a heads up about what is going on..

I have seen on the forum that others are saying that there is no more crime here than there was before it is just now there is a vehicle to let others know about it (i.e. the forum) and the yellow signs have gone done.. But without saying I believe that crime is going up how do we actually know its not? Where are stats to show that crime isnt? Just a thought..

I agree, sean, although i see not necessarily a popular view point. Strawbs, point taken - serious incidents that affect the way the area runs (LL closed to buses etc) are good to know about, but i don't really need to read about every sodding mugging that occurs in the neighbourhood because lots won't stop me from going out of my door, nor will the absence of such reports be the basis for my carrying a lot of cash and ignoring my surroundings in the small hours. But I can appreciate that victims of these things want to share and feel supported by their local online community.

That is not, however, the same as "saw a copper and possibly an ambulance, what goes on?" (at least twice on the first page of the goss section). If I start doing that from work, it could all get a even more silly.

So, in summary,

Threads about incidents where the OP is a victim - fine.

Threads where an incident results in some local disruption that we could do with knowing about - fine

Threads positively identifying a blue light bulb in the area and then speculating as to why it is there - give over.

Perhaps one thread, and one only (like we have one forumite birthdays thread, not a new one every time a birthday comes up) where all the curtain twitching can occur in one place, leaving the rest of the goss section uncluttered. In fact, might go and start it now...

I live on Peckham Rye and if i got a pound for every time I heard a siren I'd be a millionaire, but they always go straight past ,well 9out of 10 times .

Strawbs, the most recent report Carnell dug up is here

But the problem when you produce stats is that people then go "well you can't believe THEM" so it's a lose-lose

If a report comes out in a years time to say that between Jan 09 and Jan 10 crime did go up I won't be surprised - as has already been said, periods of high unemployment bring higher crime rates

But there is a reason I don't buy the South London Press - and if the current spate of threads doesn't abate it'll be the same reason I stop coming here.

If people want to talk about it then fine but I like bignumber5's idea of keeping it in a single thread. Or the often mooted idea of a seperate room (although I know that's a hassle for admin and one he isn't keen on)

Big5 - totally agree!!

S agree with you and big5 that a single thread would be better besides if I guess if it affected transport and then a sep one could be done as it is easier to read from blackberrys etc as you wont have to trawl through it just in case something has happened..

big kisses boys
