annaj
Personality is said to be made up of various characteristics, behaviours and emotional qualities and a personality disorder is a behaviour pattern or characteristics that fall outside what is accepted as normal. All of us sit somewhere along a scale for any given characteristic, for example empathy or neuroticism, but most of us are within a normal range. Someone with personality disorder is outside of that range for certain characteristics to the point where the imbalance causes problems for themselves or others. There are ten main types of personality disorder each with its own set of characteristics. People with borderline personality disorder tend to be intense and unstable in relationships, impulsive and have low self-esteem. They can be prone to self harm and alcohol and drug use. They often idealise people and become very attached and them become frustrated and disappointed when people fail to live up to their idealised expectations. Without knowing a lot more about the situation it's impossible to advise exactly what you should do, but it's a good idea to decide what your boundaries are, in other words how involved you want to be with this person, and stick to them.Personality disorders are not illnesses and cannot be cured as such. Some psychiatrists argue that diagnosing them is not helpful to the individual as it results in labelling and a sense of passivity (I can't help it it's my personality disorder) whilst others believe it helps people to understand their behaviour and any problems they may face. Hope that helps a bit, or at least gives you some context. Have she told you this or is this your interpretation based on their behaviour and history?Given her offending history, some degree of PD would not be uncommon. As Annaj said - decide your boundaries and stick to them.Do not be manipulated - she is responsible for her own behaviour, actions and the consequences thereof.Be explicit and clear about what you will and will not accept - Maybe tell her if you do not wish to be her friend or even acquaintance.Alternatively disattend to her - ignore her. Do not respond to emails/calls/texts if you do not want to be involved in anyway with her.And if you really are frightened of or feel threatened by this woman, then you must report this to the Police. If she is known to Mental Health or Probabtion Services then this information is helpful to them.Even if she isn't known to such services, a Police Caution (if grounds for such) will serve as some degree of feedback to her on the unacceptability of her behaviour and be noted on her Police record.
