There are too many of them on the road and they present a clear hazard for all road users. Many are simply not qualified to cycle on busy roads and can cycle dangerously, mounting pavements, jumping red lights and weaving dangerously in and out of traffic. They are also inconsiderate. Rarely will a cyclist ever give way to a driver. Try pulling out of a junction onto a main road in rush hour. Just when there is a break in traffic and an opportunity to pull out a huge pelathon of cyclists appears, none of them prepared to allow you to merge into the traffic.......Maybe they could be considered for torture as well.

cyclists and drivers are both legitimate road users, some good, some bad, but:

bad cyclist + car = bust wing mirror or dented wing (very rarely)

bad driver + cyclist = broken leg or death (all too common)

worth thinking about the next time you're in your car. Cyclists need a bit more room, not a bit less - we have more to lose

I?m waiting for ?.they don?t pay road tax?argument.

Cars cause damage to the carriageway, cycle tyres don?t, the bigger the vehicle the more damage you do so more tax you should pay.

This farce at the moment of lesser polluting cars paying less. I know someone with brand new 1 series BMW that only pays ?35 quid a year tax ? how is that meant to cover the damage it does to the road?? I bet the VAT on a new bicycle is more than this!

"I'm a driver and a cyclist. I think that the behaviour of some cyclists cause resentment and antagonism amongst drivers and this can pose a danger to other cyclists who may bear the brunt of this."

I'm a driver and a cyclist too. I sometimes get annoyed at the antics of other cyclists, both when I'm driving and when I'm cycling. But I don't take my annoyance out on other cyclists by driving like a cock and putting people in danger. Do you?

Fancy that... drivers getting rewarded for buying a more fuel efficient vehicle with less emmissions. Whatever next?!

Although I don't understand how the comparison with the VAT on a bike is relevant.

As the OP's rant was about driving dangerously and causing a hazard-

perhaps it would also help if ALL motor vehicles (cars, vans, taxis, buses, motorbikes, scooters, etc.) were to follow the law and actually stop at the Stop Line at junctions. The advanced Stop Line is there to allow cyclists to pull away safely.

I mean, there's a stop line, the tarmac beyond that line is usually painted green (a clue), and for the REALLY stupid motorists there's even a three foot high picture of a bike drawn on the ground. What's not to understand?

IME idiot motorcyclists tend to use the green box more than motorists. Are they above the law? It seems that in this situation its rarely / never enforced.

I wonder if the new BLUE Cycle Superhighways that BoJo has planned for the coming years will make any difference?

Do people think the ASL/green box arrangement actually works? For me it seems to give inexperienced cyclists the (IMO false) impression that it's safe to filter down the left hand side of traffic, and puts them in front of a line of traffic that will invariably want to leapfrog them as soon as the lights change. Intuitively (to me, at least) this would seem to be a contributory factor in the number of cyclists seeming to come unstuck at the hands (wheels?) of left-turning vehicle..

Andy (who prefers to pretend he's a car and wait in line for the lights to change)

Jimmy Two Times

You are an idiot. I am so glad everyone else here agrees. If you continue to have you ridiculous attitude you are very likely to injure or even kill a human being (cyclist or not we are still human!) There are bad cyclist and bad drivers on the road but it is the drivers who are the real danger.

You will have to either get used to cyclists pretty soon or I would suggest moving out of London as our dear friend Boris is planning to get cycling up by 400% by 2012.... unfortunately for you, your chosen mode of transport is not the future!

I suggest getting off your ass and out of your horrible polluting, dangerous car and cycling somewhere (of course you would be a brilliant cyclist, I'm sure) before making ridiculous and uneducated comments such as the ones you posted.

oh and by the way 'they present a clear hazzard for all road users' WE ARE ROAD USERS!

Perhaps try by letting a cyclist out (when was the last time you did this?) and have a look at the supprise on their face! We are the most vunerable road users and we are treated like crap, and although this is no excuse for bad cycling, I can see why people can think it is.

Let's have some harmony on our roads and hopefully we can start to have far fewer deaths such as the woman in Peckam last week and the woman at Elephant and castle.
