Anon strikes again.

Edit:

Edited by me, it's not the kid's fault. But I would have thought that this information is probably public information and available somewhere anyway?

Historical, political and socio-economic factors all coalesce to create the flag-waving, 'god save the queen' ranting, beer-bellied 'we'll fight 'em on the beaches' mentality that delivers up 2 BNP Euro Parliament seats.

Gallinello, I find your argument simplistic and unpersuasive.

1. At different periods of history different countries have held sway over different parts of the globe. Britain was just one of the last in the last few decades - before the US and USSR took up the baton of imperial influence. It can be argued that Britain's "stewardship" of many of the countries was positive and beneficial, in the light of its time, and certainly when compared with the actions of its European imperial rivals such as Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands. Hindsight history - viewing previous centuries and people from the perspective of 21st century culture and mores - is a dangerous game.

2. Britain's flags are not unique emblems of colonialism and imperialism - they have proud links to the battle against fascism in the 20th century and the battle against slavery in the 19th century.

3. Britain was last a true colonial power immediately prior to the 2nd World War. Many "colonial" members of that empire joined Britain in its fight against fascism.

4. In most cases Britain took positive action to dispose of the Empire rather than hang on until rebellions & civil wars lost it. (cf: Belgian Congo, Vietnam, Indonesia etc). I would agree that it was not a totally voluntary action - being as much the result of politics and economics as of altruism and a commitment to self determination, but it was done nevertheless and done in a way that, mostly, handed over power in as orderly a fashion as was possible. Many previously British Empire nations have strong legacies of effective legal, educational and political systems built on the years of Britain's rule. For reasons it is difficult to fathom the sub Sahara nations have not managed the transition as effectively.

5. I am from "around here" - if you mean London and also if you mean UK. I have travelled extensively around the world and seen many wealthy and impoverished countries. In my experience being British usually guarantees a friendly welcome almost everywhere - the last occasion I discovered this was in Aleppo & Damascus last year in Syria.

To somehow link mindless BNP faux patriotism and individuals natural fear of fascism to a unique and broadly positive period of Britain's history is, as I said, simplistic and unpersuasive.

Gallinello, a few monor points. Hapsburgs, Spain total dominance of Europe and the Americas (an empire that took 400 years to peter out, double the length of Britain's, the ottomans, the russians & soviets, all empires that can hardly be described as piecemeal and arguably more pervasive.

Britain may have Been bigger (mind you Canada and Australia are full of a lot of nothing) and wealthiest but hardly the most pervasive, it's peak lasting about fifty years. Perhaps you are conflating the empires influence with that of the industrial and agricultural revolutions with much greater

Legacies and influence.

Also the last time we were conquered was 1688, just because the winners were canny at writing the history books, don't fall for the propoganda of the 'glorious revolution' it was an invasion by a dutch prince deposing the legitimate, if odious and rather unpopular monarch of the day, who wanted his mitts on our wealth to pursue a continental agenda not in our favour at all.

On the subject of flag waving, it doesn't cause bnp type fascism, it's latched on to by those cunts. They have no claim to 'we'll fight them ok the beaches' they are the very people we were fighting.

For my part flags symbolize the oppression, abuse and wholesale slaughter of the

Millions of people who have followed those flags to their deaths in the name of jingoism, patriotism and ultimately the dubious imperial goals of the elites

WW1 wasn't just I'd even justifiable, it as murder and a crime against humanity.

A footnote to the "Glorious Revolution" of 1688 - there was one other later, but less successful, invasion that took place in 1797, in South Wales and was routed, mostly, by Welsh women whose traditional hats were mistaken by the French for those of British Grenadiers.

Sorry to interrupt. There have been a few posts recently where people have posted the personal contact details for individuals in a "here's their details, won't it be shame if something happened to them". I do not care if those details are in the public domain, I do not want that attitude on the forum. Please report any messages you see like that.

As you were.

Why has the "lounge" turned into a seething pit of macho posuring, politcial extremism and chest beating ?

If I wanst such a pariah and despised by the controllers, I would PM them and ask for an EDF shouting and fighting zone to be set up, where you can all C&P your googled & wikepeidiaed war stats in relative obscurity

Blah, the Lounge has been the place for rational and considered debate in the past and I look forward to it becoming so again. On the whole this debate has progressed from a "hands wringing" "isn't it awful" stance to providing some more considered opinions.

That's as it should be. There are also plenty of witty and intelligent threads set up in the Lounge for the amusement of all.

Room for everyone I think.

My only disappointment in recent times has been the emergence of of more puerile, kindergarden humour hijacking some seriously inclined threads. This seems to me to be impolite. Those that want to play that way should stick to the sand and water trays.

in my mind it illusrates the fundamental failure of the EU- an enoonomic union fine,a political superstate thst few engage with and is falling in popularity in most member stste, is rife wih corruptionn and doesn't act as a democracy when those in the elebtorste are allowed a vote and don't vote the way the political elite wants is a huge danger to political engagement and hence democracy....don't blame those thst didn't vote

It is/was but I bet there was an even lower turn-out in Tiananmen Square itself though...

with the amount of money they are going to recieve from the Euro pot they will be more than able to raise/change their profile and increase their vote. They will get one into the houses of parliment before long.

Instead of chucking eggs maybe our 'great' politician's should have the balls to debate with them head on.

Please don't compare them. Politically, socially and historically the comparison doesn't hold up. It's merely a lazy tool used to increase rhetoric on both sides of the debate.

Whilst EU status will give the BNP more funding and publicity it will also bring it under greater scrutiny. Only today I read that their membership policy could well be illegal, given that it discriminates on matters of race and religion, and thus under EU law they could be prosecuted.

This could be a short and pyrrhic victory for the BNP.

Exposure of their abhorrent nature is the best way to combat them, along with strong rebuttals against what they stand for.
