My emotional feeling is "if you go round with a knife, one day you might end-up sticking it in someone, maybe even me, so if there's a mandatory sentence - great - you deserve it, you little git"

but

My rational feeling is "if you lock this person up, there's a chance you might prevent a crime, but the chances are that (in the long run) you'll cause ten more in the process".

I'm sure many of you on EDF have read/heard about the tragic case of a 14 year old lad you was knifed and killed in a random gang attack in East London. The lad himslef had no association with a gang. AS he was being punched and kicked to the ground he screamed in pain and called out for his mum. The alleged assailant was heard by witnesses to have said that the victime would "feel my shank".

I'm guessing that ther are those of you on this Forum would say that the knifeman should be told in no uncertain terms that he is a very naughty boy and mustn't do such horrid things ever again. He should then be given some form of counselling so that he can, at some point in his life, be valuable to society by offering the benefit of his considerable social skills and life experience. After all the poor mite has obviously suffered some kind of trauma to act in such a nasty way. And if none of this works we let him back into society and no doubt some other inocent bystander will "feel my shank". Oh well never mind, these things are sent to try us eh?

I hope this is a reasonable, articulate and non spittle flecked and meets with the approval of d carnell, Mr MaGabhann and Bob. I trust you are all enjoying your day.

Sean my petit chou, I wasn't trying to summarise yours or anyone elses views I was simply pointing out that there those on this forum who believe in such an approach rather that the other approach of using capital punishment. That is all, you have put a slant on my thread which is by no menas intended. Have a nice day y'all.

Thanks headmaster, I'll try to do better next time.

For me, it would depend on the murder for a start. Is it a premeditated attack in cold blood, is it a "crime of passion" and so on. I still don't agree with death penalty whatever the situation, but severity of punishment would depend. For what it's worth Atila, I don't share your views, and don't always agree with your somewhat aggressive way of putting them across, but I don't blame you one bit for getting upset about the way certain posters have talked to you on this thread!

Put them in prison. Don't let them out unless they are later proven innocent.

I don?t think the question is punishment. As far as I am concerned an individual cannot make amends for murder or rape so "punishment" is a waste of time. All that needs to be done is the person should be removed from society permanently. On a purely moral level I have no problem with this being done by killing the person.

I do have issues with people baying for blood and justice though because as I have said before it is little more than reverting back to savagery.

Keef thanks for that, I can rely on you for grounded sensible commentary, unlike some that believe their view is gospel and beyond reproach & turn purple with righteous indignation when you dare to express a view contrary to their own. Cheers mate

A ten year-old who finds a gun in father's study and shoots his little sister deliberately.

A woman who's been beaten by her husband every weekend for fifteen years.

Someone who's profoundly mentally-ill slips through the care net and is released.

Euthanasia.

Someone kills your child, so you find out where they live and kill them.

They're all murder. All the same? Hang them all? Nonsense.

Did you read my post or did you just choose to ignore & respond. The question is neither irrelevant nor is it a diversion. Is is just as relevant as anything you have posted, perhaps you don't have an answer in which case don' t bother posting an irrelevant response
