Is that the lamb steaks marinated with mint? If so, I've been meaning to try those.

I'd have expected the steaks to be at least ?5 each....?

I wouldn't say so - having slept through William Rose's opening hours yesterday I have just had to resort to Tesco for my purchase of steak. 1 x sirloin, not particularly thick cut, ?6.51. Seems about right to me.

I only have to buy for one ...a couple of sausages .ditto bacon .a rib eye steak , chicken breast, lamb something or other and maybe some mince oh and their delicious ham..not dear.. all for under ?15 ,then off to Zenoria street to the new greengrocers ..fruit and veg ..bout ?8 thats me sorted for the week .!Apart from the wine that is !
In my experience W Rose is usually cheaper (tho' often by not that much) than any supermarket but delivers a significantly better product. Steaks that have been properly aged and are cut to a thickness of your specification, chicken that tastes like chicken and not fish, bacon that crisps marvelously without a watery residue and so on. Add in the level of customer service, friendly banter and sound advice and W Rose comes out a winner for me every time.
I totally agree with you. I dont buy my meat from any supermarket anymore, after many years of tasteless and tough meatI now always buy from local butchers, its even worth paying the little extra for quality and knowing you wont be disapointed.Im on quite a tight budget but will always stretch the pennies to get decent food, without being ripped off.

i think all the local food shops are better in one way or another than the supermarkets

Some are cheaper some are not, but all in all the experience is more human, more enjoyable, the food is reliably good

(I have never bought bad food from any one of the local independents), you don't have to have 45 layers of plastic packaging on everything and they often seem to have a lot more locally or British sourced produce. (In M&S and Sainsburys this week practically all there veg came from Kenya and Egypt, what's wrong with Kent?)

ps no... I am not shop keeper...

I generally shop on the "Manor" at the independents, it's value for money, good choice & seasonal. In my work I get to travel round London and the home counties & I'm always coming across something new and sometimes fabulous. But as a whole area & in a city like London we are fairly spoilt here really.

I do have a few out of the area recommendations. The Chinese supermarket in Camberwell grn for Prawns & shellfish 7 days a week. The bread stall in Northcote Road "Campilou"heaven. The Italian deli (usually has a sleeping cat in the window) on the one-way at the back of Kings cross stocks in season* Wild boar brawn from Sardinia, one slice on a warm plate with a spoon of soft pollenta eaten slowly....(oh i'm weeping) There is a fish shop on the Old wandsworth rd, just off the Vauxhall cross on the left nr the petrol station, it has a smokehouse & does an excellent smoked eel, eat warm with a thick thick slice of grilled streaky bacon and a grilled tomato , a little mash works well & wiff of Dijon mustard .....delightful .....Lastly W.R is probably the best value for seasonal game. Bear this in mind a Partridge at W.R is ?3.00 dressed and ready to cook. To go on a partridge shoot this year it will cost you ?13.00 per bird you shoot. So we get a great seasonal product & it's subsidised by the shoot.... a very nice "bargain" thankyou.

W**F

Thanks for the out of area recommendations, I knew about the italian deli where you can get some really nice things, especially the fresh italian sausages usually mid week when they come in. Will certaibnly try out the fish shop on Old Wandsworth Rd, thats a new one on me. These is also an italian deli just before Mount Pleasant at the top end of Faringdon Road.

A little closer to home is the Polish Deli (Piast)in Westow Street Crystal Palace that does a range of east european foods.

oh my god WMTD... you've turned into a human being... what on earth has happened to you?????
