meccadave
Hello all,I'm moving into the area in the next week or so and in reading up on Dulwich stumbled across this rather pleasant forum, very interesting reading your thoughts. On the subject of the Plough, a friend and I arrived on Lordship lane to have a look at a flat I was thinking about moving into, he didn't really need to come in so we agreed to meet in the Plough just over the road once I was finished. Upon arriving at the pub I was greeted by the most exclusive of requests to see my invitation. "Invitation?" Said I, "I'm sorry, is this a private party?". It turned they were having a dry run before opening night the following day. I explained I was just going to have a pint with my mate who, having presumably gone through this himself 5 minutes earlier, was sitting inside with a pint and an unusually large smile upon his face."Ok, no problem, here's a token for a free meal of your choice and any drink you like".Barely a moment passed before there were two widely smiling gentlemen stationed inside with full glasses and unbothered wallets.I took the flat. SeanMacGabhann
Welcome to the area dave. Just think if you tried for the flat a couple of months back and wandered into the old plough. . for real Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/635-the-plough-pub/page/11/#findComment-26810 Share on other sites
macroban
Some bias here?Complain about Caffe Nero, but not The Plough? But at least they put in a planning application (of sorts). SeanMacGabhann
You're actually correct macroban, and had they not reverted to the Plough name I could even say "what's good for the Goose..."I was sidestepping the planning issues for the sake of welcoming a new person but the point does remain the same - companies (or individuals for that matter) should not be allowed to bulldoze through planning legislation Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/635-the-plough-pub/page/11/#findComment-26908 Share on other sites
macroban
It's probably important to point out that these are not the only two cases. For example, I can't find any planning applications for White Stuff or Foxtons in the context of:Policy S.3.3 (page 82)and (Supplementary Guidance) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/635-the-plough-pub/page/11/#findComment-26909 Share on other sites
Jamma
I've yet to try the new Plough but did notice the bouncer last night (a bouncer on a Monday night!) and the police were outside one night last week so maybe it's taking a while to turn away the undesirables (and questions remain about where they are supposed to go to drink now). Anyway my parents are visiting at the weekend which gives me a good excuse to try the new Plough. Has anyone tried the food? Should we go there for a meal or just a drink? Given the size of the place I'm guessing there'll never be a problem getting a table. SeanMacGabhann
Well - anyone can still drink there - they don't have to go anywhere else. I've yet to see the place absolutely full but I have eaten there - week and weekend (I know - dedication to a cause)The food during the week was pretty good. Not special but for the kind of managed pub it is it was quite nice. All the dishes are quite simple (lamb steak with couscous) so I doubt there is a masterchef in the kitchenThe weekend menu eas cut down but included roasts. And apart from the spuds which had been incinerated(the next table was fine - I must have had a bad batch) it too was okDamning with faint praise? Maybe but it's all earky days - I see the menu evolving over time. The should include a few sandwich option for daytime trade IMOEDITED: on behalf of the Potato Liberation Front Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/635-the-plough-pub/page/11/#findComment-27098 Share on other sites

SeanMacGabhann
yep - respect to pubs who offer smaller portions to children and don't go down the route of scary nuggets'n'chips Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/635-the-plough-pub/page/11/#findComment-27140 Share on other sites

Ko
I would have thought that it would be perfect for a family-friendly place as it is just a couple of minutes from the Court Lane entrance of Dulwich Park. And no, I don't have children! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/635-the-plough-pub/page/11/#findComment-27170 Share on other sites
Keef
We would go there when I was little, at which time it had a great garden! Good for a sunny day, so long as people don't start moaning cos the smokers are outside breathing near the kids!!!!!!! Dodo1
Well maybe it's just me but you try explaining to a 5 year old what is a crayfish! (this was one of the w/e menu options). Nevermind my objection to paying 10 quid; in the full knowledge that she will spend her time moving everything around the plate and then say she's full! SeanMacGabhann
Do they charge full whack for children's portions? Bleep
Had lunch in the Plough on Sunday. I must say I thought the food was pretty average at best - and what was worse was the strange writing on the board in the garden saying "Order at DA BAR" or "MENU DE GARDEN". A strange mixture of trying to appeal to "youngsters" or something? However, moans aside, I must admit that their beer selection is truly excellent.
