Mario Sorrenti shot the 2012 edition of the highly covetable Pirelli Calendar ? the perennial personal organiser that has gained cult status thanks to the beautiful, nude women who adorn its pages. This year the featured models include Kate Moss, Lara Stone, Natasha Poly, Saskia de Brauw, Joan Smalls, Isabeli Fontana and Milla Jovovich; but unlike previous year?s calendars, Sorrenti?s version eschews the gratuitous, overtly sexy imagery of past efforts (like Terry Richardson in ?10 and Karl Lagerfeld last year) and instead has captured simple shots that evoke a natural, innocent beauty ? it?s a celebration and study of women.

It?s the 39th year for the Italian tire company?s famous limited-edition calendar ? trademarked as ?The Cal.? Each year a famous artist or photographer is commissioned to create a theme and the photographs for the calendar. Last year?s calendar was a classical Greek theme created by fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld.

The 2012 version was done by Mario Sorrenti, who the company says is the first Italian photographer in the history of the Italian company?s cult calendar. He chose the rugged landscape of the island of Corsica as a backdrop for his photos of 12 models and actresses ? all photographed in the manner for which Sorrenti is known: nude.

Sorrenti?s theme was ?swoon? ? ecstasy captured by images, says Pirelli. Says Sorrenti:

?In ?swoon?, I put the bodies in direct contact with Nature, which harbors them as if they were its extension, in a set of images where rocks, land, tree trunks, sky and sea are all turned into a backdrop for the bodies.?

And Sorrenti, a former model as well, told Women?s Wear Dailythat despite the content, the Pirelli photos are not sexy (really!):

?You know, originally I thought I was going to do very sexy pictures, and when we got there I realized that I didn?t want the pictures to be sexy at all.? But then he clarified that ?I meant that they?re not ?obviously? sexy. I didn?t want them to be posing and arching ??

Sorrenti?s 25 pictures for the 2012 ?Calendario Pirelli? include eighteen black and white and seven color. The package is presented in new format for the calendar, a canvas-lined portfolio.

The actresses are Ukrainian Milla Jovovich (1998 Cal by Bruce Weber), Italian Margareth Mad? and Japanese Rinko Kikuchi.
