hazelnunhead
My daughter, who has always loved reading books with illustrations / something visual, has been reading some old DFC comics from school. She is loving them, unfortunately they are no longer published.Does anyone have recommendations for comics that your children read. I am looking for a comic like the DFC one, no adverts, no junk/plastic on the front (which my daughter loves!)and perhaps something that I can get a subscription to that comes weekly or twice a month? Any recommendations appreciated . Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/63032-best-comic-for-8-year-old/ Share on other sites
Pickle
My 8 year old loves the good old Beano, reads it from cover to cover many times every month. Not sure if that's what you're after (I don't know what the DFC is?). hazelnunhead
Thanks for that Pickles, will definitely consider Beano .... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_DFCI had never heard of the "DFC" either, but my daughter picked up some old copies from school and brought them home. buggie
I have friends with sons who've read the Phoenix for a few years &really love it - they often have events/workshops which they've attended & enjoyed, often London based so worth looking out for.Love the story behind the comic too (in Simone's link). njc97
I've had Phoenix recommended by friends and my son seems to like it. Plus Beano, and unfortunately, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Dr Who one is monthly and good. Also if you want to try lots out, there's a day a year where various comic give away samplers for free. You've missed it now, but you can pick them up for ?1 online, eg:http://www.disposableheroes.co.uk/free-comic-book-day-2015/cat_362.htmlNot sure what might be suitable. Also a couple of comic books that have had good reviews:http://boingboing.net/2012/04/12/giants-beware-kids.htmlhttp://www.girlgeniusonline.com/books.phphttp://boingboing.net/2014/03/25/james-kochalkas-the-glorki.htmlhttp://boingboing.net/2014/11/26/strong-female-protagonist-book.html Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/63032-best-comic-for-8-year-old/#findComment-862155 Share on other sites

ebodad
The old DFC comic strips were collated into books. You can reserve them in the library or buy them on ebay. Just google DFC library. scareyt
The Phoenix sounds great. I came across this kids magazine a while ago and thought it looked good. It's aimed at younger children and is a magazine rather than a comic but is also free from plastic tat, ads and gender-related nonsense. http://www.okido.co.uk/ Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/63032-best-comic-for-8-year-old/#findComment-870933 Share on other sites
