somerfield doesn,t get east dulwich. how does one "get" east dulwich.

Without meaning to be precious about it, I just don't think ED needs any more chains - we've got supermarkets aplenty, not to mention excellent grocers such as the aforementioned next-to-Chener one.

I have managed, on occasions where nothing else would suffice, to walk up to Sainsburys of an evening and my legs didn't fall off. I have also managed to rustle up delicious dinners with ingredients sourced from any of the various late night grocers.

Perhaps ED needs less gastroporn and more delia

Actually I like the Somerfield fine enough. I find the staff pleasant, and have never had to wait 40 minutes to get served. Referring to a previous poster. 10-12 minutes maximum.

I enjoy finding bargains in the Gallery Of Cheapness, mostly ready meals and 14p desserts that you wouldn't usually pick up.

But heck it's 14p, I'll have five.

That's my two penn'orth on the matter.

I'm really confused about all this Somerfield talk cos I thought Co-op had bought them all out so why would it change back to Morrisons ?

Rosie H - Don't think anyone disputes that there are good local independant shops but they can't cater for the numbers that pass through a supermarket. Lovely as it may be to hark back to days unlived by most of us ie.pre-supermarket days when peole had time to go from shop to shop on a high street, the reality of living in a suburb of a capital city is that supermarkets are a necessary evil. We'd get pretty fed up waiting to pay in the lovely Andreas' (next to Chener books) as local residents bought their milk, bread and loo roll. Guess the owners would be happy though !

Yes most of us (let's not be smug, not all !) can get to Sainsbury's but why can't we have a more efficient small supermarket on the main road? Supermarkets aplenty ? Not sure about where they are and not asking for more. Just better service than the one enjoying pole position on LL.

You've got Somerfield (where I've never had a problem with queues - long, yes on occasion, but fast moving) and Iceland a few doors down (where I don't think I've ever had more than 1 or 2 people ahead of me), one of Sainsburys flagship stores 5 minutes up the road, a Tesco Metro (or is it Express) round the corner on East Dulwich Road. There are doubtless various other similar smaller ones that I haven't mentioned because I don't head that way.

I maintain that the area is well-served by supermarkets and that we have no need of a different one to cater to a 10pm+ crowd (exactly how many people are you expecting to pile into these places at that time? If as aircado was saying, it's about picking something up to eat at 10 at night, then I think that any of the grocers can cater quite well for that.)

My reference to the good independent shops was in response to aircado's assertion that the need for an M&S or Waitrose was from food snobbery. A ready meal's a ready meal (albeit arguably better quality in one of those places than in Somerfield). If it's not about ready meals, buy your ingredients from any of the independents. I don't subscribe to the notion that none of us has the time to shop for food on an ongoing basis - you're right, we do live in an age of convenience and that's why we have a 24 hour supermaarket and online shopping. It's about priorities.

I believe the Co-op have bought Somerfield but don't intend to change all the stores to Co-ops and will sell the ones they don't, so maybe Morrisons will buy that one back from the Co-op

    • The sites in question though are not comparable to the builders yard by the station and less likely to be granted planning permission for 9 storey buildings. The builders yard fronts on to the railway line on one side and virtually no residential property surrounding on the other sides. The Gibbs & Dandy /Kwikfit and ED trading trading estate are surrounded at close proximity by residential, and in the case of the latter a Grade II building, so there would more stringent height restrictions. Both these sites are tired and sad looking, and in need of development to provide much needed housing.
    • Not sure if this is any help but was initally told to use google chrome as the browser and the code was the reference. However the person at Southwark parking took pity on me and did it for me
    • I can see how it could've worked 20 or 30 years ago, when you couldn't swing a pool cue in the Foresters without hitting a sparks, a plumber or a chippy, but the area has changed somewhat. I'm not sure people around here have such trade-able skills these days. Have a word with someone in your local and you'll see. People are always going to need their boiler fixed, a damp patch sorted or their dimmer switch dimmed, but I can pretty much guarantee I'm never going need my corporate policy complied with, my social media planned, my data mined, my green transport tsared, my information architected or my analytics analysed. It reminds me of the great DIY con of the mid to late seventies. My Mum bought into it, my Dad didn't. Anyway, my Mum won out and we let the gardener go (he went on to be TV's Timmy Mallett, so that's a warning from history), but my Dad shorted the house out and singed his head when he cut through the flex on his new Black & Decker hedge trimmer. We all laughed, of course, but he got his own back when, because we didn't use a qualified electrician to do things properly, she electrocuted herself when she pulled the back of the plug off her Carmen heated rollers while it was still in the socket. Keep things professional, say 'No!' to this sort of nonsense. We pay people a decent rate of pay because they're specialists at these things. I did once barter my sister's space hopper and roller skates for twenty-odd square foot of crazy paving, though. That was a birthday present my Mum never forgot, and not in a good way.
    • Thanks both of you. I have also been having the same problem. I emailed the named person on the letter, with no response. I also tried phoning and was transferred to another number which cut me off. I hope they extend the deadline for applying as there are likely to be many people without a permit by the deadline for applying.
