'strue. I've been in London for 7 years and I've not once been mugged by a robot of any colour.

True what Sean says. I don't think anyone lives in London under the illusion that it is anything other than big city with lots a lot of social inequality and crime. I just don?t believe in being complacent about it. If people are aware, raise public knowledge, look out for each other and call for action where things can be done it can be made better.

The area east of Lordship Lane, bordered on the north and east by North Cross Road and Uplands Road and on the South by the junction of LL and Uplands Road is now a Met Police / Southwark Borough priority patrol area every evening.

I'm sure that if you ask your friendly Safer Neighborhood Sergeant face to face, rather than 'do your legs' as Snorky would have you believe, they would be happy to answer any questions you might have and do their best to allay any fear of the 'real' risk of crime.

As you were.

Sorry, but personally I don't find this very helpful. Do you have evidence they never meant to stab anyone? If they weren't prepared to do any physical harm to anyone they wouldn't have been carrying a knife in the first place. I wouldn't have thought carrying a knife is exactly common among the law abiding of us.

Frankly whilst it scares me, I would rather be warned someone round here is willing to use extreme force to steal my bag, and the original thread title did that rather better.

Just saw a policeman in Melbourne grove, I asked him what all the fuss was about and he told me the reason there were so many police about was because the Hisar got the Kebab orders wrong and they had tosend three patrol cars and a meat wagon to correct the mistakes. I can't wait for the Government's league tables on Police Station kebab orders to be published.

Really? Is this a recent thing following the Barry Road shooting?

I live in that area just next to LL and can't say I've noticed an increased police presence.

Genuinely curious.

Cynical maybe but that looks to me like classic knee-jerk policing. We need to be seen to have responded to the Barry road murder so we'll upgrade that immediate area to a 'priority patrol area'. Even though we know that the murder was not random but a specific targeted incident and not endemic of a general gun-crime risk in that area. And they've charged two guys for it already anyway I believe.

Why don't they just place a permanent bobby on the spot where the murder happened? It would be as effective a response to that murder. Pointless.

And before anyone jumps on me for suggesting the police shouldn't bother, I'm not. I'm saying they shouldn't waste resources on these type of 'responses' to one-off high profile incidents. They should be seeing a bigger picture, that surely is what they produce all these stats for isn't it? So that they know where the trends are. Or is that not what they do with the stats?

?Stabbing? suggests someone was stabbed.

They weren?t. Hence the clarification.

Imagine if newspapers wrote ?stabbing? when they meant ?armed mugging?.

Read my post on the last page where I asked the police about the shooting and the perceived increase in crime in East Dulwich. Highlights include:

"...This attack was a targeted and isolated incident and two people have since been charged and await court....we are working with the council to provide more panic alarms and other counter measures...We are also working with the council to look at the feasibility of improving lighting in many of the roads in East Dulwich"

Nothing there about knee jerk reactions.

"Leah" on the first page seems to say that the victim received a stab wound close to the heart. Am I missing something?

It?s never been mentioned since, and would be a particularly news-worthy item, no?

I would at least expect coverage in The Standard for what would amount to a fairly serious knife crime.

As mentioned Googling anything of the sort brings you back here.

To this thread, in fact.

Have we beat Sky and the wires, or should I assume the post was factually incorrect?

The victim was stabbed, it was therfore a stabbing.

Just because the initial intent was mugging, doesnt stop the end result which was a stabbing being as such. The mugger was armed with a knife and used it. To stab someone in their chest millimetres from the heart is attempted murder!

If a burglar attacks someone in their home, the attack on the person whether it be assault, battery, ABH, GBH, attempted murder, murder or manslaughter still stands..... doesnt get down graded to burglary just because that was the initial intent!

I suspect the increased police presence is due to teh spate of muggings/ attempted muggings by a gang of young ish lads (on another thread) and not a knee jerk reaction to a shooting which was isolated and the perpetrators have been caught and charged with.

A stab wound close to the heart sounds serious to me! It is fortunate the injuries were not worse than they were, the fact its not "newsworthy" doesnt make it any less significant. There is an awful lot of crime that doesn't enter the public domain, this is an active choice for public policy reasons.

Injuries not serious, therefore not news-worthy.

Fair point. It was never headline news and rightly so becauce the newspapers already have too much doom and gloom. My point is that these incidents occur accross the country frequently but most of them we just don't hear about. There are lots of evil people out there and we need to be aware of that but not live in fear.
