Go for it, it makes a big difference when your new to the street to be welcomed. I moved to ed 2 years ago and my neighbours were friendly from day one, I moved from camberwell and had great neighbors there as well, it makes room for differences to be sorted more amicably, rather that escalating if you don't know your neighbours.
when we recently moved into our new house in a new street our neighbors were the "busybodies" and approached us and we were very grateful for that as we were so busy with ourselves and getting things sorted that we'd probably have never got around to knocking on their doors and also we're a little shy .. i think you should certainly go for it .. what's the worst that can happen hey .. we've got a great road spirit and i'm glad to be apart of it ..
A bit weird to be honest, they can be very territorial they have this thing about boundaries and demarcations, they kind of also do this mission creep when it suits them, re-naming as they go. They also seem to get their world views from the back of organic cereal boxes or the Guardian, either that or they spend hours at aunties altar lighting candles for all the talent great and gone.
