I think there are very few places in London where simply being out after dark puts you in danger. Using a cashpoint makes you more likely to be a victim because it is apparent that you are going to have something worth taking i.e. cash, even if only a small amount, and if the time and/or place mean there are few people around, it becomes more likely again. Having read this thread I'd think twice about using a cashpoint on LL in the early hours, even though the actual probability of being mugged is tiny. I'm certainly not going to stay at home after dark.

Last night around 8.50pm I was clearly being marked by two youths in Kennington Road (northern end, western side). I ended up swivelling around, turning about rapidly and jumping out into the road twice. Having been mugged three times in the past, and having covered street crime as a journalist (including accompanying police on the their rounds and interviewing them about street crime), I do think I have a feel for such situations. I have to say I've never experienced any such situation in ED. It's a fairly safe place.

Obviously anyone at a cash machine is vulnerable, but that's true wherever you are. There are countries where cash machines are mostly in bank lobbies, but these tend to end up being dosser hang-outs, and I've also seen the fairly bloody results of muggings inside bank lobbies so I'm not quite sure how much real security they provide. It's really best to draw cash in daylight hours, and preferably in the bank if the amount is large.

    • No, it's not completely analogous. But no one in their right minds doubts that he's a villain who incited the storming of the capital, it goes without saying. So I don't think the events do need re-examining, we all know what happened.  He's also a litigious tyrant who's suing a US Network, which has directly led to a loss of income for me and many colleagues. I hate the guy.  That's why broadcasters can't give him any ammunition and must keep their noses clean.  Yes, I'm all up for less aggy, I don't like it one bit.
    • My wife lost a gold hoop earring with faux diamonds somewhere between Peckham Rye and Herne Hill on Tues 11 Nov. It's about an inch diameter with an interesting 'twist' pattern. She'd be extremely grateful to get it back on the off chance that anyone has found it!
    • Sorry if this is bullying, or name calling or whatever  but anyone quoting Rupert Lowe is just never ever going to have a valid point  several people misreported  that line not just the bbc - seems to have been a mishearing and I’ve seen plenty of corrections   So I don’t think it was a lie (it remains a curious distinction tho why say foreigners and nationals at all   If you want to bring back the death penalty why mention this distinction?)   Here’s a question. If Lowe or his party took power and introduced the death penalty, do you think proportionally more “nationals” or”foreign born” would receive  the death penalty? Because I think I know the answer and so do you  This bastion of truth.  Rupert Lowe https://www.bbc.co.uk/search?d=NEWS_PS I wouldnt put him on any pedestal above the bbc
