Had the most fantastic steak and chips (?13), cooked perfectly in the Magnolia on Saturday night. We hadn't booked, there were lots of spare tables. I vote this the best steak and chips in East Dulwich, possibly South London. The chef said the meat was from William Rose, very tender and v tasty.
i also had the rib-eye with chips a few weeks back in the Mag and it was fantastic. started off with the moules marinere which was also awesome - for 20 quid in total excl drinks it was cracking value for really good food. nice to walk out of somewhere and not feel short-changed!

hey guys look!

the following thread covered the same topic some time ago, great minds think alike!!(tu)

Think I've just had my best steak and chips ever!

Went to the Magnolia last night (and no, I do not have shares in the place, nor am I the chef!)

and had the most delicious tasty plate of Frenchy-ness and was instantly transported into holiday mode.

I asked for medium rare and it was!, proper home made b?arnaise sauce with fresh tarragon.

Nice pile of chips and a big green salad with basil and parsley plus a perfect dressing.

Bloody brilliant

What is your "best I've ever had"? Does not have to be food....

Best steak I've had was also sourced from W Rose - sirloin, bought on Wednesday, aged for a couple of days and eaten on Saturday. Cooked at home, accompanied by roasted potato wedges, green salad, home made bearnaise sauce and accompanied by a good bottle of wine. Excellent value and no driving or parking hassle.

Will try the Mag, tho' one day.

A-ha! Maybe this is where I've been going wrong. All these years I've been 'buying' my steaks from the butcher rather than 'sourcing' them.

*amends to-do list*

Sorry MM, couldn't resist.;-)

I bought some sirloin from W Rose last year, and found it slightly tough. On the other hand, the rump we bought from Sparkes a few weeks back was lovely and tender (and I thought rump was usually more chewy than sirloin). Still... such steak procurement activity is not extensive enough to draw any definitive conclusions.

Yeh it's a shame, I should have said something really as that was the second time I've had an excellent roast in the mag spoiled by soggy potatoes, and the rest of my lunch was wonderful.
