What are your thoughts and feelings on this subject. I was caned at home when I was very bad and got the occasional dead leg or slap upside the head from a teacher. I'm personally glad I got it as it never did me any harm. What about you.

P.s If you're Irish there's no need to reply as I'm sure you were 'birched' at some point by a parent or member of the Christian brotherhood.

well, apart from advocating corporal punishment, nothing else on this thread. But considering how many people's noses you have put out and been banned from the main section, to suggest you are a functional adult without any issues is stretching things no?

To go back to corporal punishment, and if we can take the personal reminisces out of this for a moment, why do so many people want permission to hit kids? Why do so many societies raise perfectly functional families and yet corporal punishment is not only illegal but abhorred?

As a rule my parents didn't hit me, but when they did they knew they had done something wrong and would be apologetic for ages. Not that it mattered (the apologies) - I had switched off by the time I was a teenager

If you are brought up with corporal punishment you will perpetuate it - and so the cycle continues. I'm sure there will now be a slew of righteous "its not hitting kids that has made them feral" posts but I think you'll find it's the opposite

Sean I haven't advocated corporal punishment I just asked everyones opinion on it. I like you was only caned very rarely, 4 time in my entire life. I agree with what you say about those that are beaten will become 'beaters' as corporal punishment has been administered throughout my extended family and ancestors. I don't have kids but if I did smacking wouldn't be out of the question but I doubt I'd go so far as to use a cane. My parents never apologised but they didn't have to as when I got 'six of the best' I knew I deserved it. My dad was also in the marines and demanded discipline from us, never cast a shadow over our relationship as father and son.

I am off to see Madame de Sade tonight but I guess that's not the sort of CP you were discussing.

Parenting skills leave a lot to be desired. I abhor violence and hitting kids does not teach them to be good, behave reasonably, or become good citizens. Good parenting, and the society around them, does teach them these things.

They haven't got a hope really have they.

Went to an old-fashioned Grammar School in the heart of baddest South London, which had a 300 year Academic History to be proud of.

Working Class Boys from South London had good some superb Grammar Schools to try to obtain entry to:

Addey and Stanhope, Askes, Wilsons of Camberwell (who left for Sutton ), Archbishop Tenisons, Colfes and of course there was also Schools like Dulwich College and Alleyns to dream of getting into, which my cleverest friends did.

It was very strict, literally "old-skool" Teaching methods and the Boys respected that (apart from "Jethro" Knight):)).

Some Teachers wore Black Capes and the empthasis was on learning, discipline, good manners and respect.

Funnily enough most Pupils who left received a good education, had discipline, displayed good manners and treated others with respect.

Obviously this nonsense had to stop:))

The cane was used freely by some, including weekly "dustin" tests where, as an 11/12 year old, we received a stroke of the cane for every half mark under 10/20 (!) that we got in the Geography Test. (funnily enough most Pupils developed a real keenness and eagerness to learn Geography and most passed the "O" Level with some ease).

Standards were high and the behaviour of "nearly" all Pupils was excellent, I would say.

Then it lost its "Grammar" Status.

The brighter kids from all parts of South London (deemed at "11" with all that implies) exited staged left.

The local yoof entered stage right and within 10 years this (once) proud School became a Government "Sink" School, though, thankfully, its now, finally, lost that unenviable tag.

Progress, innit...(Music is much better there now though...):)

I neither park my car or any other "vehicle" anywhere it ain't supposed to

But then, equally, I'm accused of never parking anywhere - it's all very confusing

And BBW - I'm guessing irony is intended somewhere but arbitrary use of the word "chav" (as opposed to pertinent) combined with scumhead for Nunhead.. what exactly are you aiming for? Bile? Social Commentary? Random bigotry?

I like Nunhead - not sure why anyone would get worked up enough to actively dislike it?

Quite right Tony. Sean and Woof should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. Disgusting behaviour! I picked on the part of Peckham known as 'Nunhead' for none of the 3 reasons you stated Sean. I did it for a laugh and why not eh? I and the majority of the forum characters have been in very secret contact discussing your diminishing sense of humour. Try playing a little less Resident evil 5 Sean and concentrate on adding a very large dollop of salt when it comes to interpreting what I and others post on this forum, it'll make the whole experience less stressful. Apart from that you're always welcome and guarunteed safe passage through my neck of the woods.
