On a recent thread someone asked about this website - couldn't remember it at the time but here it is.

Political Compass

Answer the questions and it will plot you on a matrix between Authoritarian / Libertarian and Left / Right on the Economy

I'm in the bottom right hand corner - but not the extreme bottom right.

By the website?s reasoning then MM http://www.politicalcompass.org/extremeright you really should be supporting the Lib Dems and not the Conservatives who are ideologically pretty similar to New Labour but just a bit more fascist.

I?m down in the far left corner.

I'm trying to drag the Conservative Party back to its roots - socially and financially liberal.

My score is:

Economic Left/Right: 5.25

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.51

I scored.

Economic left/right: -4.50

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -1.44

Interesting as the test was I don't think it was long or varied enough but in all honesty who am I too say, just my opinion.

Oh and can we just keep it too what it is 'a simple test' and not a 100 page thread/slanging match and please for the love of Elvis don't go all Guardian on us and actually feel you merit some personal moral comparison to either Ghandi or the Pope.

Not at all Matthew as I know you were being all tongue in cheek but mark my words there are some out there who will look into the mirror for two long whilst reminiscing over a previous charity event and will attempt draw a parallel of nurse Nightingale and the light brigade while they're at it. Watch this space!

BBW I am pleased to announce that I am closer to the Dalai Lama than to Gandhi, and therefore, henceforth you may all refer to me as Her Holiness. As for the love of Elvis, I sadly suspect that he and I would not share a quadrant.

OK, I get it now... I was just looking at the diagram explaining the axes. Duh. My actual diagram was hidden because it's blocked at work (presumably as it contains the work "facebook"! fascists!). I'm actually :

Economic Left/Right: -3.62

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -6.00

But this isn't what I was expecting either... oh well.

I'm not sure you could say that the roots of the Conservative party were financially liberal. Within years of forming the party your 'grassroots' backbenchers along with the Whigs rebelled against the repeal of the corn laws because they favoured protetionism.

As for social liberalism, the Conservatives only agreed tentatively with the Reform Act, which only allowed 1 in 5 men to vote, and no women. It also split the party.

Whatever the debate, this is hardly evidence of consistent roots in either social or financial liberalism.

That was the end of your lot for decades.

I seem to be pretty much slap bang in the middle between Libertairian and Left

But I can't for the life of me work out how to embed the graph into the thread

Better not fart about for too long as I've got shed loads of work to get done so this will have to do!

I tried to really think about these, and not just answer based on my morals, but what I thought was sensible, and I still came out as a soft lefty.

Economic Left/Right: -5.75

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.54

Some questions are badly worded. I disagreed with "Those with the ability to pay should have the right to higher standards of medical care", because it's not about having the right to better care, but I'm not totally against private health care for those who want it.

Yep, the question is deliberately biased.

Of course in an ideal world everybody would have access to excellent healthcare. But in reality, I'm not going to turn down the medical insurance I get with my job... and we live in a country where anyone can get NHS treatment (which in my opinion is still pretty good). I don't really have a problem with it.

    • One thing we agree on FM.  I expect that is not new and I remember looking out from a 5th floor over a pavement near Traf Sq 20 years ago and asking what the numerous spots were on an otherwise prestige light grey footpath. Some local authorities put out gum bins but as with all litter just don't drop it.  And fag ends.  And disposable vapes.  And nitrous oxide cylinders!
    • Just a few more days to try and reach the target amount.  Many thanks for all your generosity and kindness
    • What is also happening - I don't know about Sainsbury's as I no longer shop there, but certainly in other supermarkets and with some manufacturers - is that products remain the same price but the quality or quantity is reduced. Just one example: I buy Waitrose Essential tissues, only because they have plain boxes with no branding once they are in use, and I like the colours (blue for the large ones and mauve  for the smaller ones). The tissues in the mauve box have recently become so thin that they disintegrate virtually immediately you use them. Same with Cushelle quilted toilet rolls. Well, they don't disintegrate, which would be revolting, but they have also got so thin that it's hardly worth buying the quilted ones. And as for  PG Tips ...... 🤬
    • I remember all those glowing recommendations, but I haven't seen any mention of them anywhere lately. Are they still going?
