dear admin... my pics keep becoming question marks, can you explain????

Recommended Posts

Dear admin, I am having problems when I embedd an image into a thread

I add it, then check it in 'preview', then post the message and all is well... there it is within the posted message box... BUT when I look back, it has changed to a blue question mark... where are they disappearing to and why?? what can I do to prevent this?

thanks and x CC

I had the same problem yesterday, everything was ok then when I checked the thread a few hours later the image had diasappeared with a caption saying it wasn't available. Added a new photo and everything seems to be ok now though, maybe it's down to the source...

Many sites don't like people deep linking to their photographs as it can increase bandwidth depending upon the popularity of the (linking) site.

I'm sure the EDF won't do any harm, but something like Digg or Slashdot can cause sites to go down (see slashdot effect).

Hence some sites automatically deal with deeplinks by changing the names of files, replacing them with very small placeholders (blue question mark perhaps, more commonly 1 pixel gif) or even removing them completely, thus disappearing images here.

Not alot you can do, though one tactic is to put said photo on something like flickr and use flickr to host it. Or save image as.., upload it to forum and do the linking to your attachment technique. (seeds threads passim in the About this forum... for how to)

"or save images as.., " what do you mean by this??????

I like to add images as I am a designer... it is part of the way we visual lot communicate...

As long as I keep the files sizes small I guess it is OK to add images... am I right????

Not very up on forum/online etiquette as I am new to all this, advice appreciated:)

You can right click on most images on t'interwen, click save as... (PCs i guess, bound to be a mac way too)

Then upload your saved image to forum as an attachment to your post. Post some text. Go back to your post, click on the attached file, it will show you your image, save the url, edit your original post and shove that url in the insert image malarkey.

Bob's yer uncle.

    • One thing we agree on FM.  I expect that is not new and I remember looking out from a 5th floor over a pavement near Traf Sq 20 years ago and asking what the numerous spots were on an otherwise prestige light grey footpath. Some local authorities put out gum bins but as with all litter just don't drop it.  And fag ends.  And disposable vapes.  And nitrous oxide cylinders!
    • Just a few more days to try and reach the target amount.  Many thanks for all your generosity and kindness
    • What is also happening - I don't know about Sainsbury's as I no longer shop there, but certainly in other supermarkets and with some manufacturers - is that products remain the same price but the quality or quantity is reduced. Just one example: I buy Waitrose Essential tissues, only because they have plain boxes with no branding once they are in use, and I like the colours (blue for the large ones and mauve  for the smaller ones). The tissues in the mauve box have recently become so thin that they disintegrate virtually immediately you use them. Same with Cushelle quilted toilet rolls. Well, they don't disintegrate, which would be revolting, but they have also got so thin that it's hardly worth buying the quilted ones. And as for  PG Tips ...... 🤬
    • I remember all those glowing recommendations, but I haven't seen any mention of them anywhere lately. Are they still going?
