Shami Chakrabarti ?On Liberty? at Alleyn's School Thursday 21th May

Recommended Posts

Dulwich Books of West Dulwich and Alleyn's School are thrilled to host a talk with Shami Chakrabarti in the Great Hall at Alleyn's School.

On 10th September 2001 Shami Chakrabarti joined Liberty, the UK?s leading civil rights organisation, and on her second day, 11th September 2001, the world changed. Exchanging the Home Office?s Westminster location for Liberty?s premises in a converted shop in south London, Shami took up a newly-created role as a legal advisor to Liberty, and with it the culture shock both of a move from a Goliath-like department of state to a David-like NGO, and of a legal landscape that had changed overnight.

In this talk Shami will share with you why our fundamental rights and freedoms are paramount in upholding democracy, and how they are coming under unprecedented pressure today. Since 9/11 governments have decided that human and civil rights, and the rule of law, are often too costly, and have offered an apparently simple trade-off: greater security in exchange for less freedom. Drawing on her own life and work, and on Liberty?s campaigning on issues including privacy, 42 day detention and ASBOs, Shami shows why our rights are indispensable and looks to the future. These freedoms, for which generations have fought, both protect and empower us, and curb the power of the mighty ? and what?s more, Shami warns, once gone, they will be almost impossible to recover.

Doors and the pay-bar open at 7.00 pm for a 7.30pm start. After the talk, there will be a short Q&A session. Shami's book ?On Liberty? will be available for sale on the night for ?12 and she will sign copies. Seating is unreserved.

Tickets are ?12.00 (?6.00 Student / Child) and available from the Alleyn?s box office on 0208 557 1541 or online from http://mct.alleyns.org.uk.

    • So glad you found this poor little thing....  I heard that so many people tried to catch it as it was running in the road.  Well done!
    • As a one off thing, I'd 100% recommend going to Alexander Does Supper, if you like food! It's up at Dulwich Art School, and you do some life drawing, have an amazing three course meal, and then watch some burlesque! I met some great people from the local area, and it was something different that I would never have done otherwise. https://www.instagram.com/alexanderdoessupper https://www.alexanderdoessupper.com
    • No, signs of sense and scrutiny of "leaders" not knowing the impact of what they have done, so much so that every citizen in the UK will suffer financially as a result of an incompetent, incoherent, unhinged Govt that's impact is effecting every citizen in the UK. Where things were being turned around by the last lot, this lot has already compromised all that work in its first 120 days in power. You may not like it but that's the truth.  We are never going to agree and actually Reeves, Rayner and Starmer need to go, like yesterday.
