Otta
Didn't the rolling Stones take the verve to court over bittersweet symphony? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/55360-blurred-lines-lyrics/page/3/#findComment-830801 Share on other sites
Jeremy
That was settled out of court, Otta. And I think it was over sample clearance, rather than a plagiarism case. But yeah, The Verve got totally screwed. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/55360-blurred-lines-lyrics/page/3/#findComment-830806 Share on other sites
*Bob*
As Keith Richards said "If The Verve can write a better song, they can keep the money". They never did. See also that RunDMC smash remix that Nevins only got a taste of cash on and as one of the DMC crew said (something like) "if what you do is that good, play it again, Sam". He never did either. Jeremy
I don't really rate Bittersweet Symphony anyway, take away the orchestral sample (i.e. the good bit) and you're left with four generic chords, a repetitive melody, and run-of-the mill lyrics. But totally stripping them of songwriting credits was harsh. *Bob*
It's not called the music 'business' for nothing. It's fine when you're sitting around in your scummy rehearsal room smoking a doobie and being all about the music and dreaming of what might be, but when you find yourself with a big hit and money washing around it's a different story. Anyway, Ashcroft made his wedge on Drugs - a far shitter song - which I don't think would have happened without Symphony - so he did ok. Yeah that's why I chose to avoid the limelight. Keep it underground, you know. They never did. So true. The Robin Thick/Pharrel whatsit is a bit shit though and very misogynistic and it does touch on male dominance and rape fantasy blah blah.. though we shouldn't take that lightly. Coz it's fecking horrible. And if you really want some decent misogynistic tunes you can't get much better than the Stones. Just one example here. Gawd bless 'em. Fecking tune this is.Cor, and just dig Brian Jones on them marimbas, baby. Earl Aelfheah
Most pop songs seem to be secondary to the accompanying softcore videos, featuring gyrating, barely-clad women. I blame MTV. ;-) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/55360-blurred-lines-lyrics/page/3/#findComment-831021 Share on other sites

Blah Blah
Given how much music has ever been published surely it's going to be that some people write what they think is an original tune only to find themselves sued by someone saying I worte a song that sounds like that 40 years ago! It's impossible to know everything ever written. Jeremy
That's true BB. Reminds me of when Joe Satriani sued Coldplay. Both songs shared an identical - albeit generic - melody, but I'm inclined to think it was a coincidence. Otta
You'd definitely be hard pressed to write a song with an original chord progression, but when it comes to the melody or a guitar riff for example, that's more obvious. But there are loads of songs that remind me of other songs , which I'm sure is not intentional copying. Otta
The rolling stones should sue Jet for several songs on Get Born, especially "Move on". Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/55360-blurred-lines-lyrics/page/3/#findComment-831063 Share on other sites
Jeremy
Yeah but it's only really worth their while if the song's a massive earner. I don't think there's much to be made from album tracks by Aussie also-rans.
