Want to get your garden into shape this year but not sure where to start? Need a garden friend to help you differentiate the weeds from the plants and work out what's worth keeping and what to chuck? I have gardened in East Dulwich for 18 years and have run 'jane's veg school' from Crystal Palace Road for the last 8.(www.janesvegschool.co.uk).

Book a 3 hour session and I will come to you to talk through your garden problems and ideas, offering advice on positioning and care of existing plants and suggestions of tried and trusted new ones which will give you year round colour. Together we will put together a plan of action and I can suggest reliable local traders if you do not want or cannot do all the work yourself.

This session is aimed at the enthusiastic beginner gardener who just needs a bit of support and knowledge to achieve the garden of their dreams!

Further sessions on pruning, soil conditioning, compost making, cut flower growing are also available. Call Jane on 07952 898025 for further details or email janesvegschool@hotmail.co.uk to book a session. Handmade vouchers are available if you would like to give this as a present. Happy gardening!

Hi all,

Just a quick post to recommend the gardening advice service from Jane in East Dulwich (janesvegschool@hotmail.co.uk). My boyfriend and I have had a small garden for about 18 months now, and though we are excited about its potential we haven't really had a clue up until now about what to actually do with it! Last summer was spent weeding, pruning and clearing - worthwhile but not hugely rewarding.

So we've now had a garden consultation with Jane who gave us the names of all the plants we currently have and information and practical guidance about how to prune them and train them to get the best out of them. She looked at our soil and lawn and gave us tips on those too. On the basis of the space and light we have, she made suggestions for how we could add some low-maintenance new plants to bring colour and a bit of our own influence to the garden. She was also very knowledgeable about where we could go in the area to get everything we need.

It was a pleasure to have Jane come and help us with our garden ? we are feeling a lot more confident about getting stuck in! Her fees are reasonable, and we feel like we have a much better chance now of having a garden we have shaped ourselves to enjoy over the summer. Highly recommended to novice gardeners.

Autumn is a really good time to get to grips with your garden and prepare for next year - it's bulb planting time too. If you need a garden friend to discuss how you can get the most out of your garden, get in touch and book a session. Jane 07952 898025 or email me on janesvegschool@hotmail.co.uk

    • What a brilliant idea. I hope it went OK, Sue.
    • Yes, the appointments were scheduled for every ten minutes. And there is no waiting area at all this time  (sometimes for medical checks there they have a very small area inside with 3 or 4 seats). If you have come by public transport, you have to sit on the steps up to the van if you are early,  which isn't pleasant in very hot sun or pouring rain, or else wander round Asda (there's no cafe in Asda, despite it supposedly being a superstore). It's one in, one out. I don't know what happens if you are late, but I doubt they would hold up everybody who came after you in order to fit you in.  There was someone immediately before me and someone immediately after me. That's what I did in the end , so thank you for that.  I gritted my teeth and got some exercise. It wasn't as bad as I expected 😀 I did get a 37 from Nigel Road back to Goose Green on the return journey, though!
    • NHS subcontractors frequently use supermarket parking areas for CT and other screening. Easy to get to and park. They've done the same at Dog Kennel Hill in the past. Makes a lot of sense. And they ram in lots of timed appointments, so time critical is precisely right.
    • There is an NHS van in the Asda car park which is a local centre for lung cancer screenings. I'm an ex smoker (haven't smoked for decades but still at risk). My appointment was at 2pm. Any other sarcastic comments? Do feel free 🙄
