Just spoke to the headmaster's secretary. She says he will be writing to me to apologise.

I am glad all had a good time, and am please that the theatre will be a good asset to them, but I would expect much more civility and a politeness from an institution as celebrated as Alleyns is.

well said

give the toffs a break - they get precious little time to relax before they have to take up prominent roles in society that determine how we are forced to live our lives

How dare the proles get uppity when all they have to get up for is a bit of manual labour ion the morning

Hey, I've got no worries about the fireworks. I like fireworks. Even the noisy kind.

And I'm second to Nunn in my admiration for Trevor's ability to make a personal fortune from transferring shows developed with public money at the NT to the West End.

But the kind of middle-management lobby fodder this place churns out? Why, they drive me to my keyboard, so they do.

EDITED for an attempt at clarity.

What a shocking display of sour grapes about a one off event - yes it's a public school, no not everyone in S London could attend, yes the noise was loud and late, and yes the school has apologised. This has turned into more of a boring repetative socialist rant at fee paying schools than the event itself - by people who aren't even prepared to put their own name to the post e.g. 'sillywoman' - how fitting.

A certain uniformity of style, there. A product of the school debating chamber, perhaps? Or maybe something else.

The school has apologised? To all those disturbed? Really?

Shall I expect a personal letter to pop through my letter box? I don't live in the immediate vicinity (up that end by the school) and yet was bounced of my rather pleasent and much needed slumber. I look forward to such correspondance :)-D

I can't see Charter staging something like this, mainly because the budget wouldn't stretch to several thousand pounds worth of fireworks - banging kind or not.

I don't think the general voice of dissent is against the fireworks per se, just that they were on a Sunday, late, and with no warning to the residents in the immediate vicinity, good manners and consideration not coming into it.

It doens't need to turn into an argument about class etc and a personal slanging match between the haves and the have nots.

DV1 and Townley Green seem defensive, obviously as they have a vested interest, those of us that feel any negative thoughts about it are instantly branded as moaning sour grapers.

I expect a devil's advocate would find it a fairly easy job.

Ooooooooh - woooo! un-knot your knickers dv1

edited to add that I would be saying the same if a state school were as bad mannered and arrogant in their dealings with their community. It just happens that Alleyns isn't a state school.

Don't you count a snivelling apology as civility and politeness, Nero?

Could you please give us your definition of those two words for us, then?

email the school and I'm sure you'll receive one, if that's what you really want.

I count an apology as an apology. Obviously, you have issues Townleygreen that only a registered psychotherapist can deal with. I deserve an apology because Alleyns thoughtlessly disturbed my rest time, and the school's representative I talked to acknowledged a degree of wrongdoing. When Alleyns gives me an apology, I will be satisfied and wish it well and thank it for its contrition. You, it seems, feel threatened in some way by people's righteous indignation at this disturbance, and too much identify yourself with the institution. It's rather sad.
I personally thought the fireworks were outstanding and would love to know who did them as I'd definitely go to one of their shows! I agree it was a bit late for a Sunday night, but as explained in that extract from the head, Sunday seemed to be the only time that all the thesbs were free for their opening. It seems that if anyone was disturbed by the fireworks, the school is more than willing to apologise if you contact them. I personally don't see the fireworks as a major issue as I can't ever remember the school doing anything of this nature in the past. Given the fact that for 364 days of the year Alleyn's seems to have peacefully co-existed with the local community I'm willing to let them off for a 20min 'blip' on Sunday. As for those disturbed by the packing away until 1am, can the school take all of the blame for that? Perhaps in true British style, a strongly worded letter to the firework company is in order? I live locally and was not informed there were going to be any fireworks, and can see how that has annoyed people. However, how would you warn the entire local community? Leaflet everyone for a 2 mile radius? It is inevitable that an event like this is always going to upset some people. I can also see that in the middle of a recession, a fancy firework show was pehaps not the most tactile move by the school. However in this time of 'doom and gloom' as the media put it, did the firework show not spread a bit of cheer to anyone else's Sunday night? I would have thought a good fire and some music would have been right up your street Nero :)!
It has nothing to do with the fact that mostly Alleyns is a good neighbour - that is the least that can be expected. All it needed to do was to think a bit beyond its own backyard, and this debate will ensure it will do that in the future. Fireworks and music are great, but not when they are enforced on people at an unsuitable hour. Those who are complaining are within their rights, and Judge Judy or another right minded individual would very probably agree with them!

for all those labelling Alleyn's as a "dreary little prejudice-factory", the Gala event was actually used to raise bursary funds. think before you open your mouth and go on a ridiculous rant about private schools.

and for those complaining about the noise, grow up. it was a very special night and something that will remain with the school for years to come. anyone who saw the event, particularly the West Side Story production, will know what i'm talking about.

    • With fibre you are paying for the speed, which is the number, yours is 300 so if you did a lot of gaming, for example, you would want the fastest possible.  If it's just office work or maybe streaming on Netflix you likely won't need as fast, but, if there are a lot of people in your house all doing their own thing on different devices, then faster speeds are better.  I don't rely on my Wi-Fi much other than when I am using my mobile.  I use Ethernet cables to connect up everything, I Have one cable running from my router, along the skirtings and through a hole I drilled in the wall to another room.  I have attached the plusnet speed guide which gives you an idea of how it works.
    • I'd reread what you posted and try to summarise.  It just comes across as a rant.
    • Just shows, to me, once proud to be a citizen of UK.. now.. well if we pay/contribute to services - nhs, police, fire etc and folk who have made this there home - no matter what creed or culture.. for the love c of God, can someone  please explain to me.. how we have working royals who like them or not, have tried and continue to actually support and make a change and then we have Andrew.. who just destroys everything.. not just him, or royalty but his own children..  I had great admiration for The Queen - and respect.. as have a huge number of people.. but.. these old traditions where gosh.. live rent free and can’t get chucked out until I believe 2070? From what I scanned..well he has and continues to have it all.. has to go thru what old rules? Etc.  doubt very much he has even kept the upkeep maintenance up on his abode.. and do the shite keeps on pulling up.. What has Andrew done for UK or for that matter since he was 20?? Do please tell me       Totally off topic, before anyone jumps down my throat.. I just do not get how anyone is proud to be British at this point in time. Whoever is in power, seems to be able to help themselves to the public purse with no redress at all - Covid is a great example of lining of pockets.. Millions  given to Rowanda, so one is led to believe, to help with refugee problem and one can’t get a plane load off!  I simply do not get it at all. Use of food banks in UK growing yearly, homeless as well, nhs, police, fire service etc all on their knees..
    • Have applied the green roof at a number of properties and no issues you are concerned about detected. Have issues with cats defecating in the vicinity, however, they are not selecting the green roof specifically. Use decent compost, slow release fertiliser specific for green roofs, and lay it methodically not leaving blank patches. It looks amazing when cared for and adds value.
