sillywoman
Another 'YES' here - though I did wait until mine were a wee bit older (2& a half to 3), mainly due to permanent snuffly noses, but also I wanted to be sure their bodies and immune systems were strong and healthy. KatsuQueen
Please vaccinate your children. I was vaccinated against rubella as a child, but when I was pregnant, my blood tests showed that I was not immune. Apparently there is a tiny percentage of people who where the vaccine is not effective. My midwife tried to reassure me that as it was after 12 weeks, the main organs would have developed so the risk was low. Also since the MMR has been introduced, rubella is rare. It was a worrying time and nothing I could do about it at the time. Sorry if you knew this already, rubella is a mild disease but the danger is to pregnant women and the foetus as it causes birth defects including heart abnormalities and deafness. After my son was born I had the MMR and now I am immune (I checked before trying for my second child)So please vaccinate, if not only for your children but also for the pregnant women (who may not even know that they are pregnant yet) and their children. happypuppy
I believe that it is a decision that is very personal. Schools, Doctors and parents have a habit of scaremongering, which is not helpful. I have never been vaccinated and knowing people who have had adverse reactions to vaccinations including one person who was paralysed from the hips down, I feel very strongly in respecting people's choice to not vaccinate. I am now 29 and am thankful for my mother's choice. Do your own research. Speak to the rite people. Make your own choice. civilservant
yes, happypuppy, I agree that it is a personal decision, but I don't think that all schools, doctors etc are scaremongers and I'm very happy to have been vaccinated and I had my child vaccinated too.It would be very helpful to the rest of us if you could share the info on which vaccine it was that paralysed your friend? I too know a number of people who are paralysed from the hips down, but that was because their parents didn't get them vaccinated against polio. minder
Hi EastDulwichRose, I'm quite shocked that your GP has not insisted instead of just asking about the MMR, although usually it's health visitors that send out dates the vaccines are due with parents overseeing the red book recommendations. KatsuQueen
Happypuppy, sorry it is not clear if you are a woman or not, or if you have children. But I hope you will consider being vaccinated against rubella before you start trying to have children. Just as a precaution. I don't mean to be patronising, of course the risks are up to you to consider. lance_elot
I totally understand your fears about vaccinations, i read that it was linked to Autism and ADHD. But overall i think is best to get more advice, research and then make an informed decision. Our children are our own to raise as we think best, it's our right to do that as long as we are not harming them (contentious with regard to subject under discussion I know). I'm frankly shocked that you would imagine anyone could 'insist' a parent do something to their child. You do know that you can chose what you thick is best for your children? You don't have to do anything that the Doctor (or anyone) suggest to you? Health professionals can only 'offer' health interventions but it's up to us whether we chose to take them or not. We don't live in a dictatorship (thankfully). happypuppy
I posted my own advice on the subject to help someone make a decision, not to start an argument with a few very bored people. I was alarmed at the strongly negative and forceful responses, so felt the need to offer a different side. There is an argument for and against with not enough evidence on either side, making the decision making that much harder.Yes, I have posted only two times. I often have better things to do with my time than to start arguments on forums. Apparently this evening I have a little more time on my hands. I use the forum mainly as a way of keeping up to date with East Dulwich issues. As for my gender and whether I have children, I'm not sure of the relevance in that. Wow, people need to be more open minded, less judgemental and have a little more respect. enjoy
Maybe it is more than a personal decision:There is a debate about it in germany right now.the question should be more: how to vaccinate raher than if.http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-31585047 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/54694-should-i-mmr-vaccinate-my-child/page/2/#findComment-825800 Share on other sites
Administrator Administrator Posted February 24, 2015 Administrator Share Posted February 24, 2015 I don't usually stick my nose in here but it's important. Please look at the facts including http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/pages/mmr-vaccine.aspxPeople have a tendency to ignore the facts in front of them if they have a doubt, they may believe a made up hearsay story vs evidence based facts. It's how newspapers make people read their stories, if a bad thing happens to 1 person in a million they'll report that bad story so you have an emotional attachment and you think it could happen to you. Remember you are more likely to be in the 999,999 group. So please take stories from a stranger on a forum of "I know someone who was paralysed by it" in it's true context, look how many people are for it, including the medical bodies and then make a logical decision. If there was a measles outbreak in East Dulwich and a child died because a parent made the wrong decision because of what they read on the the forum I would be probably close the forum down. TE44
Administrator, I do not believe anyone questioningvaccines would make a decision by only reading on here, what often turns two opposite positions showing no respect for one another.Im a bit puzzled at your reaction, as many people have spoken on this subject on the effects of getting childhood diseases and consequence from them. Would this not also bring up a feeling of wishing to close down the forum if a decision wasmade to vaccinate with fatal consequence. As some people have said this should be aboutTrying to respect different choices and opposite views. DaveR
In many countries, school entry is conditional on a child having completed a defined course of vaccination. A sensible policy which IMHO should be introduced in the UK.
