piano valuation

As someone who sold a piano successfully on here I used ebay as a guide to price. I could not get a local dealer to value or buy my piano even though he sold it to me. He advised me to look on e bay and sell it there. Of course you may have an expensive piano, mine was a small average learn how to play one that cost a few hundred.

This thread is bringing back happy memories.

Avoid places that 'do piano valuations' (nice living to be made from turning up and charging you ?75 to tell you your piano is worth ?150, which so many are..) or people who offer to value and buy any pianos.

Best advice is to get a trustworthy piano tuner in who knows his onions, ask him to tune it and play it (if you can't) and ask him his opinion. The make will matter, but the condition of how it plays is just as important. A good make in crap condition might not be worth any more than a bad make in good condition.. you can easily spend ?1-?2k on restoring a piano. It'll need tuning anyway if you're going to sell it and most tuners have seen enough pianos and are honest enough to tell you what you've got, without any agenda.

You can do some digging yourself on the internet to see if the make is decent or not (online resources such as http://www.robertspianos.com/common-piano-makes-in-the-uk), but obvs that won't help with the condition, which is everything.

Most of the time if you can get a couple hundred quid and someone takes the bloody thing away you've probably done ok!

    • I love the library and go regularly, but noticed recently the fiction shelves were getting depleted. When I asked the reason, I was told that the library was being refurbished (fine) and that there would be fewer books afterwards (to make room for other facilities I think) so they were starting to pare down their stock. This didn't make me happy! While I appreciate the wider role libraries play in the community, surely the  core purpose of a library is the books? The staff suggested I contact Southwark Council about my concerns. I emailed the relevant councillor but never got a reply.
    • Couldn't recommend more highly. Pavel has helped us out several times over the past month while we have been downsizing, moving things to various members of our family all round London and putting stuff in storage. We have found him completely reliable, friendly, accommodating and very efficient. He and his team are always prepared to go the extra mile. We will certainly be using him again.
    • Hi, We are looking at potential property on Overhill Road. We have a 4 year old daughter that just started reception, but are thining of this being a longer term move covering both primary and secondary options.  In terms of schooling option, it feels like Overhill is a bit of a grey zone? For primary it seems like there is Goodrich and Horniman primary (we are not religious) and the Harris Option for secondary.  My wife is not too keen on Harris Academy schools and Charter East seems to be far away / out of catchment. I am keen to secure state schooling for both, if possible. Thank you
    • Fair point, those do look pretty eye-watering for the average fan. Maybe the first tranche is aimed somewhat at the corporate hospitality market? FIFA did make a huge cock-up with the Club World Cup pricing and had to heavily discount even the semi-final, so there's still hope of some cheap tickets. I can't imagine Cabo Verde vs Uzbekistan on a wet Wednesday night would be a sell-out, unless New York or Los Angeles have a 'Verdeville' or 'Little Tashkent'. Of far greater concern is that Budweiser will be the only beer available in the stadia. That's reason enough to boycott the whole thing. FIFA seem deaf to any concerns about the quantity of football being played. There are going to be more inconsequential games, but for many 'elite' players, like Kane, Mbappe and Bellingham, this will be their third summer tournament on the bounce. They'll be knackered and that's got to affect the quality of the bigger matches.
