des-res
I know. It's an odd subject line. But seriously... I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else.I came back home this afternoon, after being out for about an hour, to find Vaseline smeared around the Yale lock on my front door. Presumably, this is a sign of an unsuccessful break-in. The property has an alarm, which the perp would have experienced had they got in, and I've reported the incident to the police on 101. So I've probably done all I can for the moment apart from being a little more alert to goings-on when out and about in the area (probably a good thing) and being just a little more suspicious of folk (sadly, not so good).Just wondered if anyone's noticed anything similar, or has any thoughts. PM me if you'd prefer.Des Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/54471-suspicious-vaseline/ Share on other sites
DulwichFox
It may not be Vaseline, it may be glue... Glue can be used to stick the tumblers of Yale Lock to necessitate the calling out of a Locksmith.. goosey-goosey
Thanks, DulwichFox. It happened to me too, and it's definitely not glue. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/54471-suspicious-vaseline/#findComment-823431 Share on other sites
red devil
I've heard of Vaseline being used to prevent locks from freezing up in the Winter. Do you share the door with someone else?... des-res
Thanks for the replies. I confirmed it's Vaseline. And, no, I don't share the door with others.Take care, everyone.Des Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/54471-suspicious-vaseline/#findComment-823478 Share on other sites
sheilarose
Could someone have been trying to make a cast of the inside of the keyhole? A bit far fetched, I know, but one would use Vaseline to stop the casting medium getting stuck. pablogrande
I'm assuming this is the rear entrance? Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/54471-suspicious-vaseline/#findComment-823539 Share on other sites
des-res
SR, a cast? Good point. Or maybe they had a key whose profile was quite close to mine, so it nearly opened the door, and they thought using Vaseline would let the mechanism move a little more and so ease open the lock.PG, no this was the front door.Des Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/54471-suspicious-vaseline/#findComment-823676 Share on other sites
Mick Mac
I think PG was having a little joke. Hilarious. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/54471-suspicious-vaseline/#findComment-823695 Share on other sites
RosieH
I appreciate this is a serious thread, but I really think Suspicious Vaseline would be a great name for a band. Salsaboy
I was thinking that might have been sand in it. The Vaseline, not the door lock. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/54471-suspicious-vaseline/#findComment-823827 Share on other sites
