lululili
Since moving to East Dulwich some years back, and now having migrated to Forest Hill, I have been on the search for a good hairdresser. The issue is not so much myself as I have been rocking the perpetual ponytail look for many years now. My daughters, on the other hand are entering their teen years. We have tried many hairdressers around the area and have always had the same problem... they treat my children like children!Hair is important to a 13-year old.Even when paying full adult price for a cut, it seems that the stylists will do a quick and dirty job, spending 15 min at best on the cut and style. It requires me to ask for adjustments here and there to make it look reasonable. The idea of an actual consultation and honest advice doesn't even enter the frame. Now my daughter wants quite a radical transformation, but I am so scared given the experience to date. We have even followed the recommendations on this forum, but it seems to be the same wherever we go. We went to see one stylist this weekend and she was unbelievably rude and negative, pointing out that the desired style and colour could not be achieved and never once offering advice for what could be done instead. We decided that spending ?150 requires just a dollop more warm and fuzzy, so we walked out. Puberty is a hard time for girls as they struggle with their self-confidence. I would like to find a place where she feels comfortable, is treated with respect, and can trust that she will get what she wants. Also, a place where she can develop a relationship with the hairdresser and feel comfortable going on her own. Clearly, this is more down to the individual stylist rather than the salon, but the culture of the place does (at least should) have an impact. Please can anyone recommend a hairdresser who gets it. hazelnunhead
I have happily been going to Kuki hair on Bellenden Rd for the past couple of years. My daughter (although much younger than yours, has her hair cut there as well - and the staff who have cut it for her have been kind, listened to her, and taken their time on her cut) I would highly recommend all the staff there, and whenever I have had my hair cut they have chatted to me about what they are doing, made suggestions etc. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/54047-age-discrimination-at-ed-hairdressers/#findComment-819857 Share on other sites

Mugglesworth
Another shout for Kuki. My teenage daughter has been and was very happy with the result. Pickle
Kuki, definitely. My 6 year old has her hair done there occasionally and they take just as much care as they do on mine. Sue
Yep, Kuki in Bellenden Road. They are all lovely, and they don't discriminate at the older end of the age scale, either :)I'm sure they'd be very happy to discuss things with you before you make an appointment for your daughter.Phone beforehand as they work different days (at least, the lovely Shingo does). They're also very reasonably priced. Mustard
Reasonably priced compared to Lawler Steel perhaps, or The Galleon, but not compared to a hairdresser that will come to your home. Surprised a pensioner can afford their prices. Surprised> a pensioner can afford their prices. Are you referring to my post, Mustard?Kuki charge about forty pounds for a cut. So far as I know that is very reasonable compared to most other hairdressers round here. I have my hair cut maybe every ten weeks.Other pensioners spend money on feeding their cats. What on earth business is it of yours?I have very difficult thin fine hair, and if it is not cut well it looks terrible. Just because I'm getting old doesn't mean I want to go around feeling miserable because my hair is a mess.I used a hairdresser once who came to my home. I didn't get anywhere near as good a cut as I get at Kuki. glenfruin
Another recommendation for Kuki. My daughter who is similar age has always had a good experience there. I would say Pauline or Amy. Both are great! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/54047-age-discrimination-at-ed-hairdressers/#findComment-819920 Share on other sites

Pickle
?40 for a cut and blow dry at Kuki is on a par, if not cheaper, than a number of the home hairdressers who operate around the area. Pickle
Yes. In the past I've used Jayne Rutland (who these days works from a small salon space in Brixton). She was, from memory, ?50 (and worth it, she was very good). Shayne from Dulwich Hair was also around the ?50 mark. My experience (short hair, I get it cut every 5 or 6 weeks) is that decent home hairdressers demand a premium. There are many out there who charge less, but you get what you pay for.You pay for the convenience, although now that my kids aren't so small and I can go to a salon, I much prefer it to finding bits of hair in my kitchen for days after a cut :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/54047-age-discrimination-at-ed-hairdressers/#findComment-819953 Share on other sites
Mustard
?50 is too much.I have never paid anywhere near that.I used to use someone in North London who was good at colour, and very reasonable, but not good at cutting, so I went elsewhere for that. Stevie does both extremely well.Wasn't there someone called Carly on here that received rave reviews? Pickle
It's a matter of personal opinion though, isn't it. I think ?50 is ok if you are left feeling happy and confident with a great haircut. Similarly I think the ?40 I pay at Kuki is something of a bargain compared to the prices at other, inferior, salons. Sue
Mustard Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> ?50 is too much.> > I have never paid anywhere near that.> Perhaps we should all post our haircuts on here, with the price we paid, and let others decide what is good value for money :)Personally I'd rather pay more for a cut that makes me feel good than pay half the price for a cut that doesn't - within reason, obviously.Everybody has different budgets and different priorities.lululili, do come back on here and let us know where your daughter went in the end and what her experience was :)ETA: Pickle, I agree. I had been to every salon in ED (plus several in town and one mobile hairdresser) before I found Kuki, and heaved a huge sigh of relief. Of course it depends on who the stylist is, but from what I have seen when I've been there, everybody at Kuki seems very good. Mustard
I meant ?50 for a home visit. I can understand that for a salon, as they have overheads etc. but still wouldn't want to pay that.
