Franco Manca: are they serious??!!

Recommended Posts

I have not eaten at Franca Manca yet, however I have been told the vibe of the place is great, and what you would expect from a busy pizza place, if you dont like Sourdough, do not go there, go elsewhere. If you want wine from a wine glass, then go to a fancy restuarant. In Italy wine is drank from a tumbler in the rustic trattorias. Franca Manca is more trattoria then posh restuarant. Iv met the staff, they are very friendly, and most of them are Italian.

There are enough Pizza places in East Dulwich to choose from. I dont understand the need to be so negative, when the positives are far greater. We have so many places to choose from, just chillax :)

  • 1 month later...

I have always enjoyed the Dulwich FM and it appears that people are not really understanding what it is about. It is a sourdough pizza so the fact that it is chewy etc is part of the way it is. It is a cheap, quick turnaround venue, hence the queuing and lack of reservations. It is run like a cheaper Italian pizzeria hence the cheap (but nice) wine tumblers and the very Italian staff ? My experience of Italy is they are a lot less ?hello sir how are you today?? then we may be used to in London but I find this part of the charm.

I especially like the part of the OP being narked because the staff did not want to run through the whole menu on the phone!! Even if it is only 5 pizzas and a couple of salads that has to be the most ridiculous request to make over the phone.

Crux of it is that these are all features of FM ? some like it some don?t.

Much as I like the Gowlett's pizzas, these are another step up. More in line with Il Mirto's.

There might not be masses of toppings, but the quality of the toppings is excellent.

I'm not sure how anyone can seriously find fault with the place. Especially with the service and especially considering the prices they charge.

I don't know whether they always do this, but we went a week or so ago on a very busy night (I think a Saturday but can't remember) and they were taking names of people in the queue and asking them to come back at a particular time.

I think the wait was about half an hour.

We went back about five minutes before "our" time, having had a pint in the Palmerston, and got "our" table virtually immediately.

ETA: The only slight downside (for us!) was that we appeared to be the only people over thirty in the room :)) :)) :)) Thank goodness there is usually more of an age mix!

In reply to Sue.. No one over the age of 30.. This might explain why

This is an American study but gives a general idea..

Pizza is mainly Kiddie food. Not really an adult food...

People who like Pizza may also like Chicken Nuggets..

DulwichFox

WTF? I love this game! Let's all play 'copy a random old page off the internet to prove diddly squat'!

Here's my entry, courtesy of some Canadian lunatics:

According to NPD Group / NPD CREST Canada, the largest growth in share of pizza occasions has been in the age 50 ? 64 group. In 1995, nine per cent of eating occasions where pizza was consumed were attributed to those aged 50 ? 64. By 2005, that number had risen to 15 per cent. It?s easy to justify this change since there are more people shifting into this demographic. What?s curious though, is that the same report shows the number of pizza occasions attributed to those aged 13-17 has decreased very slightly from eight per cent in 1995 to seven per cent in 2005.

You really have lost it, haven't you?

Why don't you actually try some decent pizza, before continually criticising it on here?

It's getting really tedious :(

I think that Indian restaurant you frequent has piss poor food, both eat in and delivered, but I don't keep on and on about it. I just don't go there/order from there any more.

ETA: And I did say "there is usually more of an age mix" - perhaps you missed that bit in your eagerness to post a completely irrelevant bar chart :))

Which restaurant are you talking about...

I REGULARLY use Dulwich Tandoori, Mirash, Curry Cabin, Jaflong.

Occasionally Surma and Veer Zara.

Never Swadesh , Tandoori Nights (except curry club)

Take away from Curry Cabin and Rannaghor.

Delivery from Rannaghor, Spice Republic.

I eat a curry about 3 - 4 times a week. So get to try them all.

Been my staple diet for 40+ years

5,000 - 6,000+ Curries ?? ?90,000+ at todays prices not including drink.

Have had probably less than 10 Restaurant Pizzas in that time.. even when pissed.

Anyway, why not try a Franco Manca pizza before

continually criticising them?

What I actually said about FM was..

FM is hardly the type of place you would take someone on a first date to impress them..

Its all about Queue -- sit down -- eat -- pay -- get out. Someone needs the table.

Sort of place you go if you've got a train to catch.

Im not really knocking Franco Manca. I said from the beginning it was the best Make-Over in recent years

on Lordship Lane. I think its reasonably priced, That fits in with the fast food chain market.

Just not for me.

I'm NOT continually criticising FM.. I just don't get queuing up in the cold and rain for a Pizza

... and I don't eat it because I don't like Cheese or tomatoes..

Constantly criticising pizza, I meant, not FM.

And you can get pizza with neither cheese nor tomatoes, though I don't remember whether any of FM's pizzas come without cheese. Some certainly come without tomatoes.

if there was a conversation about a new curry place in Dulwich and i hated rice and curry then I would not bother contributing as my opinion would be irrelevant.

If you do not like cheese or tomatoes then I would not bother contributing to this conversation. If curry is your "staple diet" you are hardly that adventurous so you are obviously trying to rile people up by finding some American table about how Pizza is a kiddy meal. Let people who actually like Pizza discuss FM's merits.

Quite. Everyone's welcome to their own opinion, but if you already know you don't like something, then your opinion is not really that meaningful.

Anyway, pizza eating habits in America are not necessarily representative of the rest of the world. And most of the pizza eaten in America is probably of the Domino's/Pizza Hut variety, which resembles the real thing about as much as the "Girl At a Window" mural by the station resembles the Rembrandt original.

Brilliant comparison :)

No Dulwich Fox, they call it pizza with various combinations of yummy toppings.

If it was garlic bread then they would call it garlic bread.

But then you aren't exactly a pizza expert I think it would be fair to say :))

I'm not that adventurous ??

I have an Indian Recipe book with 221 recipes from 13 regions..

Kashmir, Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan,Bengal, Gujarat,

Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala.

You would of course need to do some research to find these cuisines on the high st.

But then I would attempt to make them myself.

Far more adventurous than Pizza. (as you mentioned it in kind)

I also enjoy Turkish food..... With dishes often not found in many High St. outlets..

Like Kisir, Manti, Mantar Sote. (apologies, EDF does not display Turkish language correctly)

Its not about D?ner Kebapi. There is some wonderful vegetarian food.

I like Chinese food but do not eat it often... also Thai food.

I eat pasta that has been cooked correctly by me.. and with sauces I have made from fresh..

I make home made Vegetable soups.. No salt / sugar so they are healthy.

I bake healthy low GI breads.

So please do not call me Unadventurous...

DulwichFox

You have also been known to get the 37 across to Putney from time to time eh Foxy.

Hahah all that does not really prove my point wrong. You have a recipe book with lots of recipes!? Big whoop. I have several recipe books and does not mean I use them. you may ?enjoy? Turkish food and you may like Chinese food and your low GI bread and soups but I was referring to your point of eating three curries a week! Maybe try incorporating some of your ?adventurous? recipes with a pizza (as you can put pretty much what you want on them) and you might like it.
