A booster seat is just that - its just to lift them up a bit so that the seat belt is in the right position across their bodies - no need to spend much at all (they all get covered in 'stuff' anyway)this will do the job as good as any

Ideally, you should try to get a high backed booster as they give side impact protection as well. There is a sale on at kiddicare online at the moment. Look at this one which is half price at the moment:

It's also worth bearing in mind that there are Group 2/3 boosters and Group 3 boosters. Group 3 is for children that weigh 22 - 36 kg (48 - 79 lbs) and Group 2/3 is for children that weigh 15 - 36 kg (33 - 79 lbs). It is important to get the right type for your child.

I just bought the Trunki boostapak seat from halfords in brixton - on sale at the moment for ?39.95. The idea being that it folds into a backpack which is accepted as hand luggage on planes making it ideal to take with you on holidays. It has room in it for a few toys/snacks. The only thing is I bought it for my nearly 4 year old and at the moment it would be a bit too big for him to carry on his back but it won't be long til he's able to.
