Mikecg
Spelling Nazis,As long as you can understand whats being said, does it really matter if the odd word is spelt wrongly. it appears to be the height of subtle sarcasm that is starting to wear a bit thin. I know to spell like the Oxford Dic would be a wonderful accolade but is it really that important if the odd word has a slight modification?Who gives a flying Bruce Lee kick to the head. Is there a spell checker on the forum NO! would it be a good idea to add one YES!. HonaloochieB
I think spelling does matter, maybe not as important on here as when preparing a report/presentation where your professional competence is going to be judged. There isn't a spell checker on here but there is always the dictionary if a word doesn't look right.I don't use the preview function on here very often so I tend to see what I've written after I've posted it, if I've mispelled something then I usually correct it, even if it's an obvious typo such as double-typing a letter or repeating a word.I was brought up to consider myself a 'good speller' so much so that for years I spelt certtain words incorrectly on the basis that if that was how I thought it was spelt then it must be so.I mean 'occaision' for example, and 'dilemna' still looks more correct to me than 'dilemma', but I bow reluctantly to OED on the matter.Naturally none of this applies if you are Nigel Molesworth and of you may of corse du as you pleese. giggirl
It's a slippery slope though isn't it Mikecg? I love the English language and I want to see it used properly. On the other hand, I accept what you say about the spelling Nazis; I've seen instances where people have corrected other people's English in a sly way. It's not clever to belittle people. Who the heck has the time to read everything through three times before posting (I do that for a living, the forum is supposed to be light-relief).I have a growing hatred of texting and it niggles when people write text-speak. Whatever became of the petty annoyances thread? We should get that back up and running. Mikecg
Yes HB I agree, if I were presenting a proposal to a client who were potentially spending a couple of mil, but this is a forum, and in the heat of conversation people don't always worry about weather or not they have stammered their finger on a key to add a rogue charactor.sometimes I check, other times I'm to shizled to bother. HonaloochieB
I'm completely ignoring the 'weather' at the moment Mike. But I'm damned if I'm letting the single 'z' in shizzled go.I'm only flesh and blood after all. david_carnell
Just use Firefox as your browser and it spell checks for you automatically.Although weirdly, it highlights its own name as a misspelling.Otherwise I'm with giggirl on this matter. It is important, but not to the extent that it's necessary to belittle people. There are some people registered on here, however, whose prose becomes close to unintelligible due to syntax, grammar, punctuation and spelling issues. It just makes their posts hard to read and thus any salient points they might have had get lost. And the use of txt spk should stay in the domain of twelve year old field-telephone users. HonaloochieB
Mike if this was the song game thread, right now I'd be posting Sloppy (I Saw My Baby Gettin' (sic)) - Devo. Not that I'm implying you're my 'baby' or anything you understand. Not with spelling like that. Keef
I am kind of with Mike, there are a few people who just can't help themselves but correct people's mistakes (you know who you are), but usually it's done with a smile.Sometimes it just feels like it's done in a nasty way, which is when I have issues with it. My friend posted on here for a while. I bright guy, but his spelling is absolutely awful (which he admits). He came on here to make a point about something, and some total w@nker (who disagreed with his point) basically used the fact his spelling was bad to sl@g him right off, and discount the validity of his point altogether! That is completely unacceptable behaviour in my opinion. If it really bugs people to see bad spelling, I'd say fair enough, but for my part, life is far too short to really give a f*ck. Dulwich Born And Bred
I think people who spend too much time correcting others really should get a life, what is the odd typo or two? Now text speak...that is a whole different thing! You forgot to correct Mikecg on his use of to and too...its TOO shizzled, not TO shizzled. Mikecg, I am not the spelling nazi but in light of this thread I thought I would be a pain in the backside and correct that typo!;-) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/5359-spelling-nazis/#findComment-171588 Share on other sites
Mikecg
I agree Keef, under the scenario you describe it is used as a kettle prod in a loosing argument. I know there are people who have been around a few years, and people have different views writing styles and humour. Sometimes it can be harder to get your point across. bigbadwolf
I'm always making spelling mistakes but I still think you should take the time to check and those above the age of 16 who think it's perfectly acceptable to bastardize the english language by using text speak don't deserve the skin they're sitting in. My girlfriend doesn't speak very good english but she tries her best and always corrects her mistakes.By the way, what level of Fuzz Buzz books are you on now Mike of have you graduated to the more challenging tomes of 'Biff n Chips'?
