mancity68
Wandered past this afternoon - looked busy and with much the usual customer base. Rear extension and outside space looks good. Seabag
One to add to the 'Vanilla List' HMB, along with The Clockhouse Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/53421-prince-albert-bellenden-road/page/2/#findComment-836324 Share on other sites
Jah Lush
The Clock House is an abomination of vanilla. A clear case of the look and feel of a pub completely ruined. I can't bear to go there anymore since its refurb. If the Prince Albert looks similar then I shan't be able to go there either. DulwichFox
Agree with Jah Lush .. The Clock House is dire.. Just cannot work it out as an area in which to drink beer. ?? richard tudor
Had my first pint in the new Albert today, designed for new locals but in saying that it was clean, vanilla as mentioned before but it has kept the old layout with the additional bit at the back.Whilst I would go back the old atmosphere is not there but that is to be accepted.I have to admit I went around 1700hrs before the bridge and tunnel people arrived. I do hope the original people return and we don't have blow in new crowd which would be a great loss.As mentioned before it is people that make a pub let's hope us oldsters are not edged out. Trends change and the upturn in Peckhams fortunes can just as easily hit the fan again.Verdict. Not the shitty, loved Abert but could be a local asset if not pontcified and caters for all. Will visit again later in the evening at some point, who knows result. Locals give it a try Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/53421-prince-albert-bellenden-road/page/2/#findComment-836396 Share on other sites
Seabag
The Clock House does score high on the "Vanilla List"But the Dulwich Woodhouse was close tooThat place is closed, but I dread its next incarnationAs Richard Tudor says above, things can change. I was in Whitstable yesterday, and weather wise it was lovely. But and it's a big BUT, the peak of its last gentrified period has definitely past. It's become slightly chinzy/seaside bric-a-brac crummy-arty in the worst way. It reminds me of Borough Market syndrome, where the place outweighs the goods on sale and there's a stench of staleness in the airI really enjoyed trips there a few years ago, specialy the Royal Oyster Stores for lunchBut sadly yesterday was a bit flat, the fish past its very best and gormless "I'm with stupid" t-shirts on the visitorsThe Natives tasted very good tho*Sigh* Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/53421-prince-albert-bellenden-road/page/2/#findComment-836439 Share on other sites
BrandNewGuy
A pint or three in the Black Dog will restore your faith in Whitstable. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/53421-prince-albert-bellenden-road/page/2/#findComment-836474 Share on other sites

Jeremy
You can hardly blame the guys for wanting more than 10 customers... adapt or die. That said, it seems like a bit of a missed opportunity and the interior looks rather dull. Rubbish beer selection. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/53421-prince-albert-bellenden-road/page/2/#findComment-836602 Share on other sites

MrBen
Managed a pint in here on Sat night - its good to have a place to get a seat /quiet pint on a Saturday night in Peckham but it's clean, sterile and late 1990's wood and carpet feel is a near perfect replica of a suburban Toby Carvery. MrBen
Wasn't looking for a sing song...but a queue to exchange two plastic coins for some dry sliced gammon and over streamed veg would have completed the time travel experience nicely. It wasn't an unpleasant experience. The beer and tunes were decent. But if you're going to spend that much on a fit out...make sure it brings in more customers than before. It's now got a strange provincial feel and non identifiable clientele -neither appealing to long time locals or to blow in hipsters. Oh well. MrBen
There needs to be a local name for this phenomena. The Prince Albert...The Dulwich Woodhouse...they've all been "Clockhoused".Examples of more decent makeovers which have upped takings:Ivy House, Waverley Arms, Great Exhibition Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/53421-prince-albert-bellenden-road/page/2/#findComment-864034 Share on other sites

Peckhamrye
The Clockhouse and Dulwich Woodhouse are perfect examples of what Youngs are doing to their pubs - not only selling out their brewery but destroying the architectural heritage of their pubs too. And they are so expensive! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/53421-prince-albert-bellenden-road/page/2/#findComment-864076 Share on other sites
Seabag
I think these pubs, no hold on: I know these pubs work from the back outwards. That is that they figure what they can offer, by paring it back to the cost over experience model, in that they take it you're 'out for a meal' so they make the surroundings palatable (enough) then they add cost, which along with the surroundings adds up to a 'good experience'.Then they subtract quality and skill and serve you expensive shit 'food and wine' from the suppliers who also play the gameSo people leave with a 'oh, that was nice' but not really knowing what was actually 'nice/ok' as it all semmed oddly odd/right/shite/wrongAnd then the in-laws go home and you feel ok because they're gone and you park up this experience until the next time they arrive, or some one else vanilla turns upI hate myself about every 6 months or so Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/53421-prince-albert-bellenden-road/page/2/#findComment-864601 Share on other sites
CARLOS THE JACKAL
No one drinks in there anymore, it's gone expensive and they don't show sport, they have destroyed a great pub. And the White horse is closing down as well.
