Okay I am a huge supporter of East Dulwich, because after all it is the centre of the universe, but even I am struggling as a single approaching 40 female, to meet and socialise with other single friends. Is it age, or area as everyone in East Dulwich seems to be a young family, or maybe that is my perception. I dont think i am ready for the womens institute just yet!!! If I am missing the action, let me know quickly.

The WI is a venerable institution, you shouldn't dismiss it out of hand. However if all else fails try match.com

Come to think of it what do single 20 somethings do in ED? In nearly 2 years I've yet to come across anyone single under the age of 30!

No, the WI is not for everyone. In my mind, it will forever be associated with big knickered ladies and lemons in socks cleavage like my monster-in-law. A bunch of new members with Orla Kiely wipe clean vinyl handbags do not make it trendy. I know that people are calling it the Trendy WI, but will they be referring to Saga as trendy soon just because they move on to the next stage in their lives?

The summer is coming Mifi, plug in your GHD, get your high heels on and get into town. Some things are worth travelling into town for!

Miffy - I met a lot of other women through the gym - people who were at first someone just to smile at and occasionally say Hi became friends. I guess you have to be confident enough to suggest going for a cup of coffee after a class and see if that leads to a more friendly footing. It worked for me.

Sadly the truth is that you do what single over 30's 40's and any age does, smile a lot at members of the opposite and same sex, look as glamerous as you are, slip into a glamerous skirt / dress / outfit, best Jimmy-choo's forward and talk to strangers with confidence.

(The last option works for me, although everyone in the maudsley is a stranger to me...)

If you want to know where single men go, that is the same question us men havce been asking for years, where do single women go... I think if we can both solve that question then job done and everyone happy...

Maybe the pair of you should get together and 'go shopping' in the bars around East Dulwich for good male-totty (if you do please warn mothers of single men in east dulwich so that they can lock their innocent sons up for the night !!)

I am really going for the over 21's section in the bar and even better if it was full of sailors. Amelie, if you are up for shopping and drinks in east dulwich let me know. I am all up for meeting new people, but remind me not to go the adventure bar wearing my hoodie!!!!

I am 34, single and female and am also finding it rather hard to hook up with fellow females, let alone men! I go to the gym before work and so not the best time to suggest a coffee as everyone is intent on getting to work. I am certainly up for shopping and drinks in ED - just name the date!

    • Does anyone know of any local tennis clubs that don't have an obscene waiting list?    Have tried: North Dulwich LTC, Dulwich Sports Club, Old College Lawn, Camber lawn.    All saying like minimum 2-3 years for a place. If there's anywhere else worth checking, would love to know!
    • Met Atilla at Forest Fest in Honor Oak last year.  Otway wasn't playing with him at the New Cross Gig.  A band called Newtown Neurotics also played but I don't remember them.  I also don't remember seeing Blur opening in a four band tour at the Academy around this time, or Pulp supporting St Etienne at the Shepherds Bush Empire a couple of years later. David Badiel and Rob Newman played the Venue around the same time; he is discussing this with Verne on Radio 2.  Googled for more info and oddly came up with this thread. I expect this will have zero interest for most of you. Unless you want to talk about famous bands you saw, but don't remember.
