Trendy W.I in East Dulwich?

Recommended Posts

Whoever gets there first should bag a table for 8-10 (8 at the moment) and ask the staff to just point out where that table is to anyone asking about the WI meeting.

It might be good for all of us to let each other know our names - there's me - Katie, Lucy(Elfy) what about everyone else?

Hi all - good to get names. Just to let you know I have had an email from Nick at idock - the office block next to The Sea Cow and he has said that we could use his space once a month for free - but only for a group of 8-10. Anyway I think as we are not sure on commitment to this whole idea at the moment that we should still just meet at G&B but it is definitely something to bear in mind. Again, as I am sure we all are, I am in the midst of chaos at work so hopefully something can happen but with lots of us involved.

Hi All. I can make Tuesday too.

You will be able to recognise me as I will be getting a blue rinse done especially for the occasion (wouldn't want to disappoint Spadetownboy) :))

I have booked a table for 10 people at 7pm on Tues, 1st May at Green & Blue. They have noted it down as being for the Women's Institute ('to be') meeting so just ask when you arrive. If anyone else wants to come along, the more the merrier. They said the wine on Tuesdays is sold at shop price. Looking forward to see you all!

Hi, everyone.

ED is a bit of a mammoth trek from North London...but can be available via phone if you need me!

Don't forget to get in touch with Surrey and get them heavily involved from the start, because they'll be hugely supportive and also tell you where you get money from, etc. and it'll make sure that you can use their experience and stuff. as well as not thinking you can do things that you can't under the WI blanket (there's not much, but there's a few bits and bobs it's worth bearing in mind)

If anyone wants to give me a call over the next few days to talk through things, gave Katiesa my number yesterday, so feel free to give me a ring.

Good luck!

xx

Thanks Katie, I've emailed Jo from the Surrey WI and am awaiting a response. Hopefully, we will get some advice about funding, admin and all the rest. I had a look on your website and it looks fab. I hope we can do something similar. Very exciting!

Sounds like you're good to go, then!

Remember to take the 'official' stuff with a pinch of salt...I know that it can be a bit overwhelming to start with, but once you've been going for a few months, it's all good :-)

We have some cool WI merch that we've had made up: badges, bags, pens. I HEART WI. If you fancy buying some from us, give us a shout!

Hurrah! There's nothing the matter with jam and chutney! If you start a WI you will find out just why we're associated with b***dy jam...and it's quite a cool reason (certainly a selfless one), as reasons go. But Jerusalem Schmusalem is what we say to singing said song. I think you're more likely to find N1WI singing Amy Winehouse or The Klaxons!

Hi Trendy W.I's

For your first meeting,

Jerusalem by William Blake

And did those feet in ancient time

Walk upon England's mountains green

And was the holy lamb of God

On England's pleasant pastures seen

And did the countenance divine

Shine forth upon our clouded hills

And was Jerusalem builded there

Among those dark Satanic mills

Bring me my bow of burning gold

Bring me my arrows of desire

Bring me my spears o'clouds unfold

Bring me my chariot of fire

I will not cease from mental fight

Nor shall my (my) sword sleep in hand

'Til we have built Jerusalem

In England's green and pleasant land

'Til we have built Jerusalem

In England's green and pleasant land

But if that's a bit passe, how bout Billy Bragg's

Well putting aside my initial gasted flabber I thought I'd take a little look at what the WI is up to these days.

Am absolutely delighted that such enthusiastic minds will be hanging up their Cath Kidston pinnies and applying their talents to this year's WI proposed campaign - "Preventing the Closure of Community Hospitals". I'm not convinced the issue is as straightforward as "all community hospitals should remain open" but maybe that could be the starting point for your debate.

Or prehaps you could get cracking on last year's campaigns to rev you up a bit -

2006

RENEWABLE ENERGY

'This meeting urges all levels of government to put in place legislation and policy requiring the use of renewable energy technologies in all new buildings, re-building and renovation.'

SPORT FOR A HEALTHY POPULATION

'This meeting urges HM Government to: recognise that participation in sport is an essential factor in the creation of a healthy population; ensure the re-establishment of competitive (mainstream) sport in the curricula of all schools; and take such steps as are necessary to reverse the decline in the availability of sporting facilities for all citizens, particularly in light of the 2012 Olympics being awarded to the city of London.'

ED won't know what's hit it. Go girls, go...

    • I had no idea about the sourcing of the paving stones - where is the info on this? The extension of the paved area seems completely unjustified- plus, there is a cycle lane right thru the middle so there are bound to be some near misses with pedestrians.
    • That's really awful. There must be someone further up the management chain who could be made aware of this?
    • I'm assuming that anybody who has a cat can afford  its food, litter, vets' fees etc. Nobody was saying that two quid is "nothing", but it's cheaper than some brands of cat litter, so was hopefully useful to the OP. Still, hopefully your post made you feel better 👍 🤣 We still don't know why there was a bag of cat litter at the bus stop! Surely it would be rather difficult to take it away unnoticed if the owner of the cat litter was  also at the bus stop? It's not like someone distracted your attention and picked your pocket and you didn't notice till some time later! But what is also confusing me is, if the OP knows where the thief lives, why don't they go and ask for their cat litter back?
    • The market is only there for a few hours on Saturdays! Surely all street markets are "a bit tatty"! That seems a strange reason to close a road permanently to traffic!  There is already at least one seat  in North Cross Road (which seems to be quite well used),  apart from those for customers of The Palmerston,  and several of the shops in the road have greenery outside
