BargainBetty
Sorry to be old fashioned but when I visited Rolier White last week to buy some candles, they seemed to me indistinguishable from them thati bought down Rye lane at the pound shop. When i mentioned this to the staff they e xplained that these candles were imported specdially from italy and that they were handmade and exclusive to the shop. How can this be I wondered. they are exactly like the ones i bought in peckahm. They also sell things that the shop next door sell too, at a hugely inflated price. any one else noticed this about this shop? makes me wonder what else in the shop is a huge rip off. jimbo1964
I don't think that's fair. Candles can be extremely expensive. I take it from your name that you are keen on a bargain. That's fine you can buy where you like but don't come on here and try to bad mouth a long established ED small business. KidKruger
I would look at it more from a positive perspective. You've seen inordinately expensive candles in an ED shop, but there's seen somewhere in Peckham cheaper.Congratulations !! Enjoy the pound shop. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/52651-is-rollier-white-a-vip-pound-shop/#findComment-808394 Share on other sites
DulwichFox
I bought some 'expensive' white dinner plates there some years back. Turn them upside down on a flat surface and they wobble. Clearly not quality crockery. Half the price or cheaper at IKEA for a similar quality product. jimbo1964
Well we have some nice white crockery from RL. Seems like good quality to me. But maybe better to try to drive them out of business and get a new betting shop opened up instead (FFS). 'Turn them upside down on a flat surface and they wobble. Clearly not quality crockery.'Just a thought. As they're not meant to be used upside down this could be how they are supposed to be.. or that they aren't as mass produced as IKEA? jimbo1964
Quite. I just looked and the crockery RL sell (which actually is quite well priced) is also sold in Selfridges, House of Fraser and other well known outlets. So clearly rubbish. BargainBetty
The point is that these candles are exactly the same as the pound shop..now I don't mind a business making a fair margin but surely we are looking at an example of wool being pulled over festive eyes here ? jimbo1964
No. You were taking one spurious example and extrapolating that to question everything in the shop. Seems like sh*t stirring to me. DulwichFox
I did not say they were rubbish. They are labelled as being made by Maxwell Williams which sells globally and has 500 outlets in the UK so would suggest to me to be mass produced. They are serviceable but not high end porcelain. Could not see Roullier White opening a shop on Rye Lane.. for example... East Dulwich perfect.. People with money. Too much in my opinion. There is nothing wrong with IKEA. Just scratch off the label and your guests will never know the difference Just pretend. jimbo1964
I expect RL opened a shop in ED because the owner is a local person who has been here a long time. So good on him I say. DulwichFox
Anyway, everyone who is anyone in ED. now eats off of a slate.. Cos they went somewhere in Bellenden Village and reckon it was dead cool. KidKruger
All these posh people moving into the area, eating off plates and stuff, and other people opening shops to sell 'em all that fluff. Proper gets my back up already.Blow-ins. Blah Blah
Also there are different types of candle wax. Just because they may look similar to a candle elsewhere doesn't mean they are of the same quality or burn time etc. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/52651-is-rollier-white-a-vip-pound-shop/#findComment-808537 Share on other sites
BargainBetty
Dear NewWave.. yes its true I am new to the area and this forum but I was simply trying to point out a fairly obvious example of how repackaging can dupe the innocent consumer- a prime example being Blah Blah. No personal agenda I assure you. I am sure that the lady who owns Roulier WHite is charming but she doesn't need to rip off people to run a decent and successful business Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/52651-is-rollier-white-a-vip-pound-shop/#findComment-808539 Share on other sites
Blah Blah
Now you are making a big accusation, without knowing anything about the ingredients and supplier of those candles. You've just admitted the candles have different packaging, so probably a different supplier don't you think? Blah Blah
There ya go for starters betty,http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/candlemakingbasics/tp/typesofcandlewaxes.htmSo after the wax there is quality of scent to consider (and quantity) and then the quality of the wick and the burn time. You are assuming all of these things are the same from candle to candle. They are not. Blah Blah
Just looked on their website. Betty, you will not get candles like these in the pound shop. As suspected some of their candles are soy and a have burn times of 40 hours. Those are standard prices for those quality of candles. I think you should retract your 'rip off' accusation.Edited to add that I just looked on the suppliers website of the french candles and those are the prices the company charges if you buy direct from them. It took me all of five minutes to find that out Betty. You could have done the same before posting such ill informed nonsense. jimmah
There's quite a difference between candles (even if they look similar on the outside) some pump out loads of soot and toxins others burn "clean" it depends on what they have been made with. If you're going to be burning them for ages over a dinner table or seance then you probably want the more expensive ones. If you just want something on the mantlepiece to dust then poundshop probably does it. BargainBetty
That's precisely my point Jimmmah and what provoked my post in the first place.Anyway Caveat Emptor. DulwichFox
I would estimate that most of the profit from candles goes to the manufacturer. That profit would come from the Name. A ?5.00 Candle made from hypothetical The Victoria Beckham Summer Elegance Range. Could sell for ?30.00 Retailers would have to pay a high price and add on their bit. Their bit would vary as to where their outlet was. In ED that is likely to be at a premium. BargainBetty
Interesting..Dulwich Fox. My guess is that the average small retailer will be operating on a target gross margin of around 50% but this will vary across their product range Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/52651-is-rollier-white-a-vip-pound-shop/#findComment-808622 Share on other sites
