LadyNorwood
I rang to check if they had a particular chutney in stock (quite a difficult one to find) - he said that he did and had plenty of it; couldn't get to the shops that day, when I did go in the following day, he told me off for not having been in before (even though the shelf was groaning with jars of said condiment)! maxxi
I'm a fan of the man and his cheeses - may come across as taciturn but if you talk to him he is friendly and knowledgeable - he has a dry sense of humour too which can be misread. Not cheap but the Brie de Meaux alone is worth the price.Snobbery my arse. Louisa
Me neither. Yeah, you pay for cheese and you get cheese. Except you may be paying an awful lot more for the cheese. Louisa. Louisa
Why in this country do we have to pay through the nose to buy good quality food? Good cheeses and wines are sold in supermarkets as well as local shops and are freely available to all budgets. Such a throw back to the british class system that quality cheese should be priced highly so lower budgets cannot afford them. Louisa. Jeremy
Why is good stuff more expensive than crap stuff?? It's so unfair!! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/52262-the-cheese-block/page/3/#findComment-805927 Share on other sites
Louisa
Jeremy in France it isn't. Good quality cheese is bought by everyone without any form of snobbery. Only this country do we have this struggle between class structures over where we buy our food. Louisa. BrandNewGuy
In France, wine is cheap, extortionate and everything in between. Let's not wheel the tumbrels out just yet... the-e-dealer
Yeah in France cheap cheese is the same price as expensive cheese. But they dont sell anything but French Cheese. That makes us snobs. Doh!If we had a 'Cobbler's Corner' that post would go in it! Jeremy
Have you ever actually been in a French supermarket? They have LOADS of cheap mass produced cheeses. They do not cost the same as the good stuff.Stop making stuff up! Louisa
I think the french have a better understanding of food though and class isn't allowed to cloudy the waters over who can eat what and where to buy it from. Price is the biggest barrier to that in the UK, and it's amusing to see spanish, italian delis, specialist cheese shops aimed at the middle classes in ED when back at home this food would be available to all people of all classes because price isn't a barrier. I'm not knocking iceland cheese, had a reasonable bit of cheddar out of there more than once before.Louisa.
