?The Ark before Noah: the story of the Flood? ? Dr Irving Finkel at Dulwich Picture Gallery Tuesday

Recommended Posts

Dulwich Books in association with the Friends of the Dulwich Picture Gallery are delighted to welcome Dr Irving Finkel to discuss his book ?The Ark Before Noah: Decoding the Story of the Flood.?

In 1985 a member of the public walked into the British Museum with a tiny piece of ancient Babylonian clay. Irving Finkel, assistant keeper of the Ancient Mesopotamian Department in the British Museum, realised immediately that it was of enormous significance, but it was not until 2009 that the tablet could be deciphered. Dating from 1850 BC, the tablet contains the detailed instructions for building the Ark which, it turns out, was round like a coracle.

?A serious book, but rarely a heavy one: in a sprightly, good-humoured way, Finkel communicates the thrill of true scholarship...it feels fresh and exciting here.? - The Sunday Times
