Chick
I asked a vegan if they ate honey and was surprised when she said ?no, they (bees) mix it with saliva?. I am not sure that is true but I find it weird that any one wouldn?t eat honey for moral reasons.I doubt bees produce saliva. Lowlander
Jains don't eat it, but never heard of Western vegans avoiding it Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/51314-do-vegans-eat-honey/#findComment-797474 Share on other sites
DulwichFox
The secret ingredient that turns nectar into honey is bee ?spit.? Chemicals in the bees? saliva help change the nectar into sugars. The nectar/saliva mixture is then stored in the beeswax comb by the workers. ClaphamMum
I thought that Veganism by definition was avoiding anything produced by animals, including honey and wool that don't require the animal to die to be produced. I guess it depends how extreme you are. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/51314-do-vegans-eat-honey/#findComment-797484 Share on other sites
El Pibe
so if a vegan was to brush a fly off an apple, does that mean they can no longer eat it as it contains fly vomit? Robert Poste's Child
I heard someone on the radio say this morning, 'Well, I've never heard a carrot scream'. Rather arrogant to assume that because it doesn't register to our limited range of senses, it can't exist. According to some Buddhists, at a microbiological level, a salad sandwich is carnage (vegage?).On the Food Prog on R4 this week it was said that mushrooms are somewhere between animal and vegetable, which is thought-provoking. bermygirl31
No - strict vegans do not eat honey. It's for the same reason they don't drink milk. A strict vegan doesn't eat anything at all that is derived from an animal....and that means anything. My cousin is vegan and they are very strict about that. El Pibe
so if humans were to go around gathering pollen and turning it honey would that be allowed?
