Hi there

Long shot, but we had 2 locked bikes stolen from outside the Half Moon pub yesterday afternoon at 4pm.

One is my son's beloved red Islabike racer with distinctive new royal blue handlebar tape.

The other is husband's black Cannondale road bike.

Am very annoyed as the adult bike is used for commuting every day.

Reported to police who logged it. Have also looked on Bikeshd and Gumtree. Any other ideas what to do to try and track them down?

And please do PM me if, on the off chance, you see/are offered either.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your bikes. Were they locked to a stand or something else? I often leave my bike there and it would be useful to know if some spots are more vulnerable than others.

In past threads people also suggested Brick Lane, and another possibility later on would be the police auctions as they can't always reunited the bikes they find with their real owners. You could also look in the For Sale sections of this and the Herne Hill forums - you never know.

bad luck! You say they were "firmly" locked - what kind of lock did you use?(most "cheap" i.e. less than ?50 can be easily broken by experienced bike thieves) We've had about 5 bikes down the years stolen - mostly locked up outside the house or in the garden shed. I've come to the conclusion that the only thing which will stop them is using a serious motorbike type chain lock (16mm diameter hardened steel chain links minimum - too thick for bolt cutters) but these are very heavy to carry around. I've never recovered any of the bikes i've had nicked but I never stop looking! Good luck with the search.

I think that's Sam the Wheel's house. He builds and repairs bike wheels and is reknowned for it so would suggest that those bikes on Railton Road are legit.

Sorry to hear about your loss, gingertom. I think I've seen your son out on his Islabike before and he must be gutted.

My only suggestion is to keep checking gumtree etc. Sometimes they don't end up on there until a few days to a week later. Good luck.

    • We’ve just done a loft extension and needed it all painted as well as touch ups to the rest of the house. Our experience with Hussein and his team was great. Communication good, they turned up on time every day, and completed the job in the time frame initially stated. The finished job looks great, I would definitely recommend.
    • Sue, we are in a similar position - though not quite as ancient as you! 🤣 Ours is a 21 year old Honda Civic.  Reliable as hell, IS ULEZ compliant, passes all the tests, MOTS etc.  BUT, as it sits on the drive most of the time, is now as dead as a doornail to the extent that we can no longer open it with the fob, though we are able to open the passenger door only, with the key.  Jump leads didn't work, so hubby bought a "starter" similar to what breakdown companies use.  Nowt.  Hubby then called out the AA who were able to start it via their van.  However, the AA advised leaving the car running for at least an hour and a half.  We decided not to do that as the fumes would be unpleasant for us and our neighbours.  They also informed us that unless we replaced the battery, we would not be able to call them out again.  Long story short, once we turned the engine off it wouldn't re-start.  So, hubby has now bought a trickle charger from Argos (roughly £35 and AA approved).  Apparently it could take up to 100 hours to charge and given that we don't want to leave it charging overnight or in the rain, it will be a while before we will know whether this has solved the issue.  So, watch this space! I am hoping this £35 will be a good investment.
