have 2 kids and 2 cats and really need to have a quicker floor cleaning option than the good old mop and bucket.

i need something quick so that i can do a quick clean after dinner etc.

we recently bought a stick/handheld vaccuum cleaner which has been great - just grab it, vacuum the worst bits, and then do a proper vacuum less often. so i would like the equivalent in the kitchen.

steam mop? something else?

cheers!

I have the VAX steam mop. Really handy, easy to use, lightweight. It is not quite like the adverts, (which depict a brilliant shine as you use it) but it cleans easily, and far better than my mopping! You can also wash in the machine the bits that attach at the bottom.

I am not sure I could return to a normal mop / bucket and all that wringing out of dirty water,

I have a steam mop and its great. Dries in seconds so no slipping over. I'd never return to a mop and bucket or getting on my hands are knees. We have tiled kitchen, bathroom and toilet floors and then laminate hall way, it brings them all up nicely although mine was just a cheap experiment from asda! I've also cleaned the carpet with it, although the job wasn't good enough to notice a thing expect for the smell coming out of the carpet!!!
I got the "thane h2o steam mop", I love it. I do all the tiles and flooring, and tried it on the hob etc (although you can't beat bicarbonate of soda for hob cleaning), the sofa etc..I was in Robert dyas the other day, and they had this smelly liquid stuff that you could add to the steam cleaner, I gave it a go and it left a lovely smell around the flat. I could never use an ordinary mop and bucket again. Thoroughly recommend it :)

does anyone know if steam mops are OK on a rubber floor - we have studded rubber floor tiles and cats in and out of the garden - right now it hardly gets washed at all as I can't see the point with it so wet at the mo, but the endless muddy paw prints do get me down!

    • Interesting, because I am finding it next to impossible to get an appointment at Tessa Jowell.
    • Yes, I live Colyton/Dovedale area and lots of swifts usually.  I'd love a swift nesting box too.
    • There's always a large flock(?) over the area of back gardens surrounded by Colyton / Dovedale / Marmora / Scutari, but no idea if / where there are any nesting boxes. We'd love to have one, and often have swifts zooming close by, checking out possible sites.
    • I would have thought the cost of erecting X meters of metal barriers would be the same irrespective of location, plus given the issues with access now due to the "bunds", it would also be easier given the ample direct access the common provides? The reason I've heard from the organisers is that their footprint has been tailor made for that part of the park, so it's not possible to fit it anywhere else. Which is a ridiculous argument given that  they've already altered / extended it due to the space they've 'lost' from the "bunds". The reason I've heard from FOPR and others is that as the common is public land (or similar) it requires permission from the Home Secretary (or similar) due to ancient grazing rights or something. Oddly it doesn't seem to have affected the circus, the steam fair, the dog show etc etc etc Yes, the wide path where Parkrun starts & finishes will become a controlled crossing during the build, and completely closed off during the festival. Also, when I asked about the reason for the extended footprint onto the sports pitch, they said it was to replace lost space where the bunds are, which they used to store equipment. However, they were unable to explain where this storage area now was on the new plan... And when asked about the loss of the sports pitch due to the extension & access road, they said the council had assured them there were no matches booked for that period. But what about the kids, families, who play on them? No answer...
