ladywotlunches
Normally Mr Lwl and I avoid such PDAs like the plague, but this year, the grandparents are down and have offered to babysit and it would seem churlish to refuse!Anyone heard of any special menus that aren't too 'cheesy' (not in the food sense) - or even better, any places that are sticking to their normal menu, and won't be packed shoulder to shoulder with tables for two, with rose sellers popping through the door every 5 minutes?Blimey - this does sound a bit 'bah-humbug'. Its not meant to be, I'm looking forward to a night out, but not one that's too OTT on the valentines schmulzh.Any thoughts? Mikecg
Maybe I am unromantic but I always tell my wife Valentines is supposed to be anonymous, because we have been married 15 years theres no point because we know eachother. Ted Max
ladywotlunches, I think restaurants are to be avoided on the big V. Do something else instead - theatre, clubbing, dancing, getting off your face on cheap booze at the bus stop. Anything different really, perhaps something you used to do together when younger, or don't get the chance to now. Peckhamgatecrasher
Pair of long johns each, hamper from F&M, bunk over the fence at Peckham Rye and have a picnic in the moonlight. dulwichmum
I am sorry sweetie, I was suspicious at the mention of long johns, but the word "bunk" is always a huge turn off for me.The Rosendale is a terrific local spot for a nice meal on Valentines night. Not a gimick in sight. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/5059-valentines-night-ideas/#findComment-163089 Share on other sites
HonaloochieB
Perhaps going to a church and lighting a candle each for all the lonely people. Then leaving the church together, one turning left and one right. You both go approximately 100 yards round different sides of the church.Within a prearranged minute, you go back and light a candle to only the lonely. As you leave your partner is on the steps, he sweeps you into his arms and you both tell each you why it is you love each other and kiss. After that, pretty much anything mentioned above, or indeed to come below is fine. HonaloochieB
And of course LWL, if at any point you could introduce the Two Ronnies' 'four candles' gag into the proceedings, then so much the better. SeanMacGabhann
I gt the impression teh OP wants to do something local in ED - so not quite Lounge material yet. Possibly close. Moos
How about 'meeting' in a bar and chatting each other up?Actually, come to think of it that is the height of cheese. But a could be a nice reminder of why you fell for ChapWotLunches in the first place.Edited to say - obviously an ED bar. In ED. Or near ED. Anyway, a local thing. :-$ Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/5059-valentines-night-ideas/#findComment-163179 Share on other sites
lozzyloz
Get dressed up and go for a few cocktails at Beauberry House, then pretend you left the iron on at home, returning to a surprise candle lit meal prepared by a local (celebrity) chef. Keef
Being as it is a Saturday this year, I plan to make an extra special effort to not lie in bed hungover until football focus starts, I shall then NOT watch said programme. If she survives the shock of that, we might go out (in ED). Louisa
Have to recommend Le Moulin, I can assure you it will not be overly Valetinesed. Eric and Margaret just make you feel very welcome minus the frills and spills.Louisa. LuvPeckham
Had lunch at the rye today (I needed to get out) and Di (the owner) told me that their sister pub (The Bridge in Penge) is doing a "Dump a date, find a Mate" night - Basically you bring someone of the opposite sex to you (i.e. your date) and hopefully meet someone new that evening (the concept relies on even numbers of males and females arriving as couples)Best Anti Valentines night I have heard about in years..... however it also sounds like a glorified penge version of wife swapping !!! CW1
Spare a thought for us single people. Is there any respite from the hearts and flowers for us in ED? Mick Mac
well CW1 - I feel despite popular opinion, there are more singles than couples in ED. So go out and do your best on Valentines night - most couples will be in the restaurants - so go for the pubs and even single people will be in romantic mood - what could be more romantic than meeting your girl/guy for the first time on Valentines night. HonaloochieB
Perhaps the singletons might like to follow what I have come to think of as a tradition. On the 14th Feb go to Somerfield, and look at all around you buying what you loftily consider to be somewhat incongruous and last minute items.Make cogent and not at all snotty observations. "Would he, ever be buying flowers apart from a relative's funeral"? "Is it possible that she thinks that card is in any possible way anything other than an expression of depraved indifference"?"That box of chocolates? Seriously pal, there are prisoners in solitary confinement who'll be having better sex than you tonight"And so on.I then buy my annual litre of Gordons gin. With of course some slimline tonic.Get back and toast the lovers with large G&Ts until the pain and numbness levels balance out. Then I put on the Valentines song, as I like to think of it. #There's a club if you'd like to goyou could meet somebody who really loves youso you go, and you stand on your ownand you leave on your ownand you go home, and you cryand you want to die....#And there's a thread elsewhere with people saying they're in love with me.Christ only knows how the rest of you get on.
