Is is appropriate to tip Ocado/Tesco/Sainsburys delivery men/women?

I am actually asking on behalf of someone else, who doesn't live in ED, not that I have to explain myself!

It wouldn't have occured to me to tip, but my friend said the guy was extremely helpful and friendly, was fairly old, and the boxes were really heavy for him, and after he'd left she felt like she should have tipped him something.

I said I wasn't sure, hence why i'm asking.

When I do a big shop I usually give them ?1-?2 but if it's not that heavy and under ?50 I just say

"thanks and be lucky"

Inappropriate to use a supermarket delivery service? Whatever next? I've had deliveries from both ocado and sainsburys, never felt the need to tip drivers of either. It's not that the service has been bad - they are generally friendly and do what they say on the tin- it's just that having paid for the groceries and then the delivery charge as well, i am unwilling to pay a 3rd time.

I would suggest that whenever service of any kind has been above and beyond what was expected then a little thank you would probably not be out of place.

So tipping a supermarket deliver should not be the norm but maybe in the circumstances your friend might have liked to show their appreciation.

I don't think so and I have a funny feeling that I read somewhere that Ocado drivers aren't even allowed to use a customer's loo so I doubt they'd be allowed to accept a tip. I know my company's drivers would be expected to turn down a tip since delivery is their job. The Ocado guys always offer to lug my groceries up a floor which is much appreciated!

I suppose if you get the same driver each time and get to know him, then a Christmas 'thanks' tip might be OK but even that seems to have gone out of fashion these days.

Thanks for your input. I guess it's sometimes a bit awkward and all a bit embarassing. It's much easier when cash is exchanged, then you can just say keep the change...

Okay, Friend excused as they aren't local, but more importantly do you support our local shops ?

You are right you don't have to explain yourself but in these troubled times, the more support our local shops get, the more likely they are to survive.

True, however I have to survive too. I therefore choose the most affordable way of shopping depending on the month's budget. This usually involves a supermarket shop, at Sainsbury's (gasp), followed by smaller purchases throughout the rest of the month at local shops for milk/bread etc.

If I had the time and money to prance up and down Lordship Lane all day chatting to shop owners and buying ?15 chickens I'd be very content. But I also like Sainsbury's and shouldn't be made to feel guilty about it. I could spend hours in there if I had the time. I'm their ideal customer, get completley lured in by all the colours and smells!

Can we have your opinions on supermarket van drivers that shop in small, local independent stores or, conversely, local small business owners who shop in supermarkets? They do, you know. I've seen them with my own eyes. The Bastards!

It's such a load of nonsense, isn't it? If all the local food shops were open when I get home from work at 8:30 on a Wednesday night, then LuvPeckham might have a valid point.

No need to apologise, LordshipLovely! It wasn't a dig, just it's subject that has been done to death on here in one way or another with predictable results

Shop wherever you like / wherever is affordable / wherever is convenient, I say, and think yourself lucky to have the choice(tu)

Good point Keef, LuvPeckham, Live Locally and shop in both..... (and yes occasionally I buy some other items in the Supermarket too)

Well raised Jeremy, and it is a pity that shops can't open later to suit everyone as that would make life easier for shopping locally.

Lordship Lovely, an interesting cost comparison was done in Peckham just over a year ago*, which demonstrated that most supermarkets cost (on average) 15-25% more for the same items that can be found locally. I agree that a ?15 Chicken is extreme but I now find that I save money by shopping locally in East Dulwich and Peckham (although shoppign locally does take longer, it can ensure that both town centres remain viable)

Also didn't mean to get your back up, was meant as a humor(less) remark...

* The comparison was part of the Flava's of Peckham event and may not yeild the same results now that Supermarkets are promoting budget items

Yes indeed. And spending half of Saturday playing at shops doesn't appeal. :)

It would never occur to me to tip the Ocado man (or woman) given that I have already paid a delivery charge.

I've always understood that for Ocado it's ten per cent of the total bill and for Somerfield a kick in the britches and a curse.

LP - it obviously depends what you're buying. As a general rule I find fruit and veg are a lot cheaper locally, but (good quality) meat/household goods/storecupboard supplies are cheaper in the supermarket.

This is obviously my opinion and works for me.

I know that my local shop gets half its stock from Sainsburys anyway, as i've seen them loading up a small van in the car park.

Anyway, thanks for all your opinions on tipping.

BTW - I spend less money on the weekly shop using Ocado than I did when I used Sainsburys. Local shops get my business too.

Yeah, my mum used to get loads of stuff from Kwik Save when she had a shop!

it's surely far more ecologically sound for Ocado to deliver, say, 50 local "big shops" in their van than for 50 of us to pile into our cars and drive to DKH Sainsbury's or Beckenham Waitrose? In any case if I get all the heavy boring stuff delivered that still leaves me free to use the local shops for the quality stuff...
