What I find funny in the North/South debate is that Bromley, which I guess could and should still be considered SE London, is the third wealthiest postal district in the Gtr London area. It also is one of the most rural and one of the most affluent. But the good old folk of ED who like sitting outside trendy bars and cafes thinking they are in Kensington fail to notice this. North London has the central belt on it's side, but apart from the really crappy inner sections of the south side, the suburbs are far wealthier south of the river than they are north. East London is a horrid place, with a beacon of hope in Shoreditch and Hoxton (for the young trendies), while west/north west London is just a suburban sprawl of nothingness. At least we maintain our ancient villages south of the river and remain relatively green compared to the north side. We also have wealthy Surrey and Kent bordering us, as opposed to chavy Essex and grotty Hertfordshire.

Louisa.

I'm surely it (Bromley) has it's wealthy parts, but then so does Guildford - and I don't want to live there either. Or Kingston. Or Richmond. Or New Malden, or Croydon and definitely not Mitcham.

These are suburban towns outside London, not suburbs of London - despite what it says on the map. I've got plenty of time to live somewhere like that when I'm old, fat, bald, wear pink jumpers with a rhomboid pattern in summer, barbour jackets in winter, trapped in a loveless marriage and don't have any friends.

Bromley is in Kent. I never think of Bromley in London.

Anyway, so I have to say - as someone whose work takes them all over London regularly, and mostly back streets not just main roads - I would have to say that South London has a lot more, and nicer, small areas. Difficult to explain this one, but here's a small example: I worked with someone last week who said he lived in Walthamstow Village. When I asked him for street names, I realised the area he was referring to. Village my arse. It's just a row of streets boundaried by main roads. Only estate agents called it Village. Nothing at all special about it. But there are many such small areas in north London which are equally not that special (and I mean outside of the obvious Hampstead Kilburn type sprawls).

Yet when someone drives up Lordship Lane and sees the little independent shops, or drives into Nunhead and sees the Green and the little independent shops, or even around Lee, or even that small area (Bolingbroke?) south of Clapham, they just seem to look nicer and stand alone. Difficult to describe! I'll have another coffee and come back to this.

Yeah, you get none of those little independant shops and communities north of the river, certainly not in H******y.

Broadway Market, Stoke Newington Church Street, Hoxton, Victoria Park north side. No vibrant atmosphere or quality independant shops to see there. No siree.

:)

In London, you find the neighbourhood that suits your current lifestyle (and deep-seated prejudices) and stick with it, until something changes (bit more cash, wife, kids, new found love of shopping centres etc.) and then you move on. But each step along the way you insist that there is nowhere else you'd rather live.

He was like "Yo" and she was like "Woah! No way" and I was like "Whatever."

    • Hey are these two keys with no keyring? I lost them a while back so not sure if they will be the same!
    • Another glowing review for Julian!! I am now referring to Julian as ‘the legend’. I had spent 5 years waiting until I could afford to get some cupboards built in, and I couldn’t be happier. I am often allergic to overbearing advice when it comes to work I have commissioned and am paying for, but I found Julian’s advice so helpful. He offered his opinion about my plans in a very constructive way, and helped me come up with a much better plan. His ideas were better than mine! Not something I usually like to admit. The work was exemplary, and he cleared up beautifully. He was communicative and a pleasure to deal with. I am so delighted with my cupboards and floating shelves. He doesn’t paint them, but I think that is better, as it’s a specialist job, and it means you can either save money and paint them yourself, or get a painter and decorator to paint them properly. He is a brilliant carpenter. The only problem now is that I have so much more hanging space thanks to his advice, that I may not get rid of all the old clothes I can no longer fit into!  Anyway, highly highly recommended if you need fitted carpentry cupboards or shelves, and want to work with someone who cares about the outcome. Thank you so much Julian!
    • For many years I went to Ken's on NXR.  He was pretty much the only barber  in ED  Now we have more barbers than you could shake a stick at - all the way down from the Plough through to DKH and some are empty of customers - even on the evenings and weekends.  I never ceased to be amazed that they continued to operate despite not having clients and realised that they were probably into money-laundering - just like the sweet shops along Oxford street. I went once to one on LL and certainly wasn't impressed with their. My dear wife has cut my hair ever since. I don't believe in supporting criminals. • People are more likely to go back and retrace their route rather than look on the EDF.  If you’re reluctant to and them on a fence or something, perhaps you could put a note with your phone number there
