Otta
As an aside, where does "doris" come from? I know what it means, but I am not sure what the rhyming slang is.(probably something really obvious) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/49934-does-the-doris-that-plays-the-pathologist-in-lewis/#findComment-787759 Share on other sites
Loz
Don't think it is rhyming slang. I think it started as a city-boy/trader description for a less-than-attractive female. Otta
Ah, right. Not that I was ever likely to use it anyway, but even less so now. Robert Poste's Child
Short for 'Dockyard Doris' maybe, which I remember older gay friends using to mean an unattractively butch queen, possibly after a drag act with the same name. edcam
Dockyard Doris was a real drag queen (real name allegedly Colin Devereaux). In my teens I crewed for a panto season at my local theatre and he used to drink a bottle of rose and half a bottle of rum during each performance. The use of "Doris" to refer to a woman is new to me. Has distinctly uncomfortable undertones though. Peckhamgatecrasher
I've seen her on The Lane (Saarf London coolspeak). She is very pretty and petite in real life, no comparison to the drag queens I've seen.A deoch and doris is far more interesting. Townleygreen
i've heard Doris used disparagingly since the mid 90s in this area Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/49934-does-the-doris-that-plays-the-pathologist-in-lewis/#findComment-787999 Share on other sites
El Pibe
I've not heard it used disparagingly, I just thought it was standard cod mockney fare, the sort of thing you'd hear Ray Winstone or Danny Dyer utter. "one rule in life son, never'it a Doris" That sort of thing.
