Earl Aelfheah
I'm going to get shouted at for this, but... Sonic Youth? I liked them as a kid, but listening to them now (with one or two exceptions) their songs just aren't very good. Influential on lot's of others though.Personally, I still like the Pixies. Surfa Rosa and Doolittle are great albums. Levina
I give her credit for being a highly insightful and creative person but there is just something about her voice that grates on me. El Pibe
Sonic Youth's more recent stuff is actually worth a listen especially as its not particularly hyped.Try Sonic Nurse for starters showing they've kind of mellowed, or Eternal, which is as close to an actual rock album as they're ever likely to manage.I recommended them to a colleague a few years back, who wanted to watch some live music and they were playiing their london dates. He didn't talk to me for about 3 days."why would you do that to me?" he kept asking :D Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/49901-most-overrated-bands-artists-thread/page/5/#findComment-788639 Share on other sites
maxxi
The (then) desperately trendy (in a black 501s and waxed DMs kind of early 80s way) Art of Noise, Propaganda, Anne Pigalle in fact most stuff on ZTT (except 808 State). El Pibe
Again, I'm a bit hit and miss with Nick Cave, No More Shall We Part is a truly beautiful album, i challenge anyone not to be moved by it. Although i guess some might have bowel movements, but that's why the world is interesting i guess. Robert Poste's Child
Santana.Looking at the previous posts it seems to be mainly down to personal taste, so it'll probably be the same names. It may also depend on who rates them - does critical opinion count more than popularity?Worth remembering too that their reputation may not have grown organically and may be partly due to misguided PR or celebrity stuff. With Coldplay, for example, the Gwyneth Paltrow link certainly added something to how people see them. El Pibe
Abba? They may not be everyone's thing, but surely you can't deny they understood pop and were the absolute pass masters at it? El Pibe
It probably does help to keep below the radar a little bit, huge success or critical acclaim often turn people off.But not so far below that you don't achieve the slightly miasmic concept of 'rated'. Jeremy
Agree with Abba EP, would rarely listen to them by choice (Mama Mia has stripped away any enjoyment I may have otherwise garnered from their music) but you can't deny their mastery... hook after hook, with rich arrangements. El Pibe
Yep, a shite musical of your canon is probably the best way to turn people off....except for the millions of people who like that sort fo thing of course, I think I'd prefer room 101...in fact that might BE my room 101 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/49901-most-overrated-bands-artists-thread/page/5/#findComment-788839 Share on other sites
