Well said. Don't forget the Frog Chorus and the A. Patridge favourite "Jet"

I'm a little teapot, short and stout

Here's my handle, here's my spout

When I get all steamed up, hear me shout

Tip me over and pour me out

The lyrics may seem simple; child-like even. But just think.. if everybody was a little teapot - there wouldn't be so much damn hurtin' in the world.

I love *Bob* so much it causes me actual physical pain.

You know what else is a meaningful song:

I Light A Candle To Our Love

In Love Our Problems Disapper

But All In All We Soon Discover

That One And One Is All We Long To Hear

All'round The World

Little Children Being Born To The World

Got To Give Them All We Can 'Til The War Is Won

Then Will The Work Be Done

Help Them To Learn (Help Them To Learn)

Songs Of Joy Instead Of Burn, Baby, Burn (Burn, Baby Burn)

Let Us Show Them How To Play The Pipes Of Peace

Play The Pipes Of Peace

Help Me To Learn

Songs Of Joy Instead Of Burn, Baby, Burn

Won't You Show Me To Play (How To Play) The Pipes Of Peace (Pipes Of Peace)

Play The Pipes Of Peace

What Do You Say? (What Do You Say)

Will The Human Race Be Run In A Day? (In A Day)

Or Will Someone Save This Planet We're Playing On?

Is It The Only One? (What Are We Going To Do?)

Help Them To See (Help Them To See)

That The People Here Are Like You And Me (You And Me)

Let Us Show Them How To Play (How To Play) The Pipes Of

Peace (Pipesofpeace)

Play The Pipes Of Peace

You can have Kanye, LCD soundsystem, Hot Chip and John Lennon. But PJ Harvey? Even if only for Rid of Me, Stories from.... and Let England Shake. 3 completely different albums but all equally brilliant.

Laura Marling's a strange one- I thought her debut was terrific, and I don't think she's made a bad album but i rarely bother listening to her. I saw her play Scala on the back of the first album and it was mesmerising.

I didn't think anyone other than me rated Dirty Projector's that highly. I think they're one of the most interesting bands around. Beautiful, unusual harmonies from the girls, great guitar work from Dave Longstreth and some good songwriting to boot. Sometimes the hooks are hidden so deep it takes listen after listen after listen to catch them and that some people don't have the patience for that but that's a big part of the joy of music for me- songs/bands that really creep up on you tend to be the ones that have more longevity. I find that's the case with the National, especially their earlier stuff (in particular Sad Songs....).

I loved the second Wavves album, King of The Beach and thought the first wasn't bad. Not got round to the two since though.

I think Kings of Leon are the most overrated band of recent times. Their first album wasn't bad- a fun southern rock album thick with hooks and no pretensions but they went down hill very quickly after that.

I also think Bright Eyes were great, although I'm not so taken with his solo stuff. He's a fantastic performer too.

PJ Harvey is the one that I like most in that list, but she seems to have attained some sort of god status amongst critics, and given I find her output patchy (oh but when she hits highs they *are* high) I think she merits overrated, but don't mistake that for bad.

I took me a while to work out that Wavves is just boring, fuzz is there for emotional effect, not to mask the fact that you don't have a melody, admittedly he may have improved, I wouldn't know.

dirty Projectors are another critics darling. I've tried to like them, I don't know if I'm missing something, but if I have to work that hard to simply squueze some actual enjoyment rather than some sort of admiration of someone's wanking ability I'd rather spend my time more fruitfully elsewhere. I do adore the national though. They've been at it for years and seem to be in danger of become darlings, though it's not really their fault in this case, they've not dramatically changed their approach in a decade.

If we're going fo underrated though, Built to Spill leap to mind. Pavement stole the music press pages (and were perhaps overrated though I'm a massive fan, and Malkmus's subsequent solo/jicks stuff) and they were criminally ignored.

Ooh, and I too quite like Laura, she's good at what she does, it's just i have several artists of a similar ilk in my collection who do it better. I guess she just did it when there was a lull in the music scene here, just as some other female artists were beginning to do their stuff too. Best of luck to her, good lass.

I love Keane. Especially their 'Perfect Symmetry' album. Must admit though that they are not as good now as they were a few years ago.

Crumbs, not sure what difference being a cover makes to my dislike of it but a quick look on wikipedia suggests you are spot on - covered a couple of times, failed to chart on the second / third attempts - here are the lyrics for anyone who remains unconvinced...

We get it on most every night

when that moon is big and bright

its a supernatural delight

everybodys dancing in the moonlight

we get

everybody here is out of sight

they dont bark and they dont bite

they keep things loose they keep it tight

everybodys dancing in the moonlight

(Sorry for going a bit off-topic with an overrated song... And it would appear I have had my come-uppance as I now can't get the tune out of my head.)

Paperback Writer, Elanor Rigby, Helter Skelter, Back In the USSR... surely classics. Unfortunately Frog Chorus, Mull of Kintyre, and a string of performances at major events, bobbing his stupid turtle head along to "Hey Jude", have completely soiled his legacy. That awful thing he did with Dave Grohl didn't help either. The popular opinion now seems to be that he has always been shit, but it's simply not the case.

Surely Keane, Travis, and similar latter-day easy listening is not really critically acclaimed, and therefore not overrated as such..

    • Because land has been exempt from inheritance tax wealthy individuals (like Clarkson and Dyson) have used it as a tax avoidance measure. Clarkson is on the record stating that he bought land for precisely this purpose. It is people like him who farmers should be angry with, if anyone, because they have exploited a loophole, which is now being (partially) closed. Yes, I do grasp the concept of inheritance - it's were one is given money, or valuable assets by chance of birth (having done nothing to earn it). As money you have earned, is taxed, it seems odd that money you have not, shouldn't be. I assume you don't disapprove of income tax? Why do you think people coming into a massive, unearned windfall shouldn't pay tax, but a nurse who works hard for everything they earn, should? Everyone has to pay inheritance tax over a certain threshold. In my opinion, if you are fortunate enough to be gifted any amount of money (whether cash, or a valuable asset), to quibble about paying some tax on some of it, seems rather entitled. Most farms worth under £3m will still end up being passed on tax free. Those that do have to a pay inheritance tax will do so at just 20% on that part of it that is over the threshold (rather than the standard 40%), and they'll have 10 years to do so (usually it is payable immediately). So it is still preferential terms for those being gifted a multimillion pound estate.
    • Ah yes, good spot! Thanks for the link. It sounds like they are planning a licensed restaurant with a small bar from reading through the application.
    • I think your ISP has jumped the gun - told you about a change that isn't quite here. I agree with suggestion of https://www.aa.net.uk/ - i have been with them since ADSL was invented and found them helpful.
    • I’m younger than you but have received a couple of cheques in the past year or so. And also written one out. Depositing a cheque is actually less of a faff then setting up a new payee or sharing your details. Just open the app, go the section to deposit money and take a picture of the cheque.
