Probably worth a thread in its own right (if anyone is interested) but Evans as a business has been pretty disastrous for a number of years.  I used to shop in the Cut from time to time maybe up to ten or 15 years ago, good sales and great customer service.  I was going to report that it was when they expanded it all went wrong - new stores being franchises, but a quick look on Wiki that was not the case, the company was doing so well in the 90s/00s that they brought the empire back in house.  It all went wrong when they were sold off to equity companies in 2008, going bankrupt in 2018, brought by Sports Direct and now again bankrupt.

By the time the Dulwich store had opened I'd long since found shops I prefer, Brixton Cycles long ago, particularly when it was on my commute) and in the last ten years plus Viadas in Honor Oak.  Other independent cycle stores are available.  Others may be sorry that Dulwich store has gone.

I miss HSS but that is another story.

Agreed on West 16th - went last week, and it has good coffee and a nice ambience. Very cool interior. I think it will do a lot to jazz up that little strip of shops opposite Judith Kerr Primary School, which will work for all the businesses there - including Gusto Italiano, which has a lovely little garden and great paninis.

Meanwhile, in Forest Hill: a nice little coffee shop has opened up in the old Internet cafe (!) next to the old Wetherspoons. Galao is at 27 London Rd in Forest Hill.

<rant>Which wiki. If you mean Wikipedia it wouldn't be too much bother to say so. </rant>

Everybody knows what Wiki is, surely? And it's quicker to type.

On another topic above, I see Screwfix have opened a branch in the Walworth Road, where surely parking would be even more difficult for builders  than in Lordship Lane.

Are they suddenly expanding all over the country, or is it just round here?

Screwfix is ramping up its one hour delivery service through the app. They're going to be the Deliveroo of hardware. It'll be very popular among tradies who won't have to leave site because they've run out of flanges or sealant.

equity companies just want to make some money and then get out. no interest in the actual business or quality of service etc. leeches.

The new business on Frogley Rd, where tbe plant shop used to be is going to be a wine shop and wine bar called, Planet of the Grapes. A small chain with spots in central London. More info here https://drinksretailingnews.co.uk/planet-of-the-grapes-owner-lines-up-new-site/

Yes I saw that from the bus a couple of weeks ago.  It was rather a narrow frontage though.  I 'm not sure what a typical Screwfix is like, but my mental image of them, maybe got from their web presence, is large.

OOF is actually sort of right about wiki, btw, though i wouldn't personally rate it rant class.  😉 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki.  Checking in my History, I see I've recently while googling ended up at each of wikiquote.org, wikidoc.org and wikihow.com (that I find a really useful one).  But none of those is the place I go to to start a knowledge seach: that's Wikipedia's unique realm; and if someone uses just "Wiki" I'd be pretty sure they were talking about the pedia.

Sometimes accuracy is important. I would say it more important as a pharmacist (say,) than an IT professional.

    • Recently I completed a pre-diabetes awareness course. Run by an outside agency at huge cost I expect, but I digress. After the course we are all expected to arrange our own blood tests.  When I requested from TJ I was initially treated with suspicion, i.e where did you get the pre-d course from! I explained it was from TJ and they refused to book on the phone, told me to use ASK MY GP link.  I explained this wasn't working for me, but no appointment was arranged. Eventually got ASK MY GP working, and requested bloods. About 8 days later I received a text link to book one. It took me every day of checking for 5 days before any appointments were available and then the earliest was a month away. Fine. Late Feb booked Got a phone call from the surgery yesterday, responding to the ASK MY GP request! Sorry? I'm confused, it's booked! (effectively after saying they won't book over the phone, this was literally what was happening) I then get a missed call from them, return the call and they say they have no idea why I was called.  Literally 5 minutes later someone calls again, my original booking can't ne honoured because it's too late in the day. Bear in mind this was FROM THEIR DROP DOWN MENU. I'm then expected to go online and book again! Beggars belief
