I expect to see more closures of our independents as they feel the squeeze of Southwark Council as they bring in plans to stop parking or cars coming to the area under the thin guise of healthy streets when it's obviously a financial driven decision by the council.

There?s actually going to be a bakery opposite, according to signs in a window. It implies it?s to be a healthy bakery, whatever that means!

I think that I saw something that said the shop on the corner - Hirsts / Truly Scrumptions is going to be a branch of Browns of Brockley (nothing to do with Jones of Brockley as far as i know!).

The old 'As Nature Intended' is going to be an Arapina Bakery - lots of vegan and free from options. They have a place in Borough and also do Greenwich market.

The lane and its environs is obviously suffering, which is why tenants (and estate agents that represent them) must do more to keep the place looking attractive. There ought to be a zero tolerance to vandalism (eg. spraying, etc.) on the part of business owners who often do nothing to make their frontages look nice when the shutters are down. The upper, more commercial bit of Melbourne Grove and that corner of EDG are tatty and some LL shops likewise are messy. The council does clean up shutters free of charge generally - all a business needs to do is sign a waiver. Please ask Cllr McAsh and/or the businesses themselves if you agree. Thanks

The ongoing mystery is how come the As Nature Intended shop has re let, yet the old Threshers remains stubbornly empty. Its been empty for years its really baffling.

Also haven't heard anything further about Gails opening up in the old Brickhouse premises, can imagine that opening a cafe with a large eat in area isn't so appealing at the moment though?

I've seen two possible explanations - one that the landlord will only let as an off-licence or that there is a lease restriction which makes it impractical to change the use of the shop.

Makes less sense to me as surely the lease could have been broken by now without penalty but I guess it could be true?

Yes - i'd seen that in the past, but it makes no sense on an enduring basis. Also looking at the 'change of use' categories the former seems unlikely - also even with the restriction, i'd have thought someone would want to take it on. Such a shame as having long term empty units isn't great for the surrounding shops either. All the rest have refilled pretty quickly over the years.

It's true all high streets will continue to face immense challenges once we get over the current maelstrom. Increases in rates/rents/online shopping etc are well documented, however we have a special high street in ED, with generally smaller units that have historically not appealed to larger chain operators.

I welcome them all and also welcome more diversity - not within a type of vendor (food, drink) but in general. I do think saturation point is really near and too many posher (dearer) comestible shops detract from the high street, making it seem more and more the place for a certain type of shopper (eater?) to go. I know this is not a reality but it is fair to suggest that the look and feel of place can put off some shoppers and, by extension, some would-be business owners.

There was talk for a while that Dough Bakehouse in Herne Hill was looking to open a branch in Dulwich. They opened a branch in Beckenham...

The woman who runs it was the winner on The Apprentice in 2019.

However their website makes no mention of any plans for Dulwich...

So, more info. The new bakery Arapina, which specialises in gluten free and healthy options baking, is (I think) in the old Threshers.

The coffee shop in the old Truly Scrumptious has the St. David?s Coffee house (Forest Hill) team behind it, so the coffee will be good!

The As Nature Intended shop seems to still be available.

I think the problem for Truly Scrumptious was that if a shop is selling lower priced bread, then there is the competition from the supermarkets, some of whom have in house bakeries and sell good bread.

After nearly a year of shopping pretty much exclusively for food locally, I think we are really fortunate in the range of shops we have. But if we want to keep them we have to use them.

Oh, and the Coop is closing for a month for refurbishment from 5th February.

Based on the attached variation of permissions request on the Southwark Planning website it looks as though Gail?s are still interested in the old Brick House site on Zenoria Street. Lots of work appears to have been done to the premises already. I?m sure I read on the forum previously that the landlord is Parkhill (but I could of course be wrong):

They want to open until 8pm! Citing that their other sites open until 8pm BUT that is a complete lie. they open until 5:30, 4 pm 5pm all over the place.

I received a Job alert recently for a sous chef for a new opening of a "high end" steak and BBQ restaurant in Dulwich.

(didn't say if it was in east Dulwich or the Village, or possibly west)... it was described as being an intimate 50 cover space, no name given as through an agency
