New Shops in Dulwich / Peckham

Message added by Administrator,

Due to this topic being excessively long, a new 2024 "New Shops in Dulwich / Peckham" has been opened here. Please continue the discussion there.

Never been to 'Turtle Bay'. But it looks like Disneyfied Caribbean-lite for white people. Maybe an apt metaphor for the rapidly changing demographic of the area.

Still, these chain places seem to have one big advantage - they tend to stay open all day. So good for families who want to eat at 5pm for instance. Options are pretty limited for an early dinner around Peckham Rye area, so I'm sure we'll be trying it at some point.

They also have branches in Brixton and Walthamstow. I once tried their Milton Keynes branch and enjoyed my cocktails, which were two for one until 7/8pm most nights. The food offering is acceptable. It's just another addition to the expanding nightlife economy of Peckham really.

I'm old enough to remember Amazulu's classic 80's cut 'Montego Bay' - AND we had an Austin Montego. So I already have a longstanding affinity with the Caribbean.

Hopefully 'Turtle Bay' will provide the same thrills.

Yeh I mean they're both restaurants, both chains sure, but Turtle Bay is about as akin to Pizza Express as it is Nandos.

Bah humbug. If you really thought the authentic Caribbean or Peckham was so great, you'd live there. But you don't - you live in New Cross and post thousands of times on the East Dulwich Forum.

I just thought that a novelty Caribbean themed restaurant seemed a little ironic given the fears of gentrification and social cleansing in the area that many have.

BTW I live in Peckham - not that it's any of your concern. I probably do post too much on here, but that's none of your concern either!

Have you been to a Turtle Bay restaurant before? I am assuming not, if you think my comparison with Nando's is so far off target. They specialise in barbecued food, particularly Chicken - but not exclusively. Hence why I suggested they would be a good comparable to Nandos seeing as they both do similar main menu stalwarts. Stop splitting hairs please, Pizza Express is of course not comparable.

Is this the shop that's being painted 'middle class grey' :-) next to Mr Bao's or another shop around there?

Seeing a few windows of old shops being covered in brown paper around Nigel road.

The more restaurants the merrier - although my waistline does not agree - getting the Peckham paunch with these new eateries!
