Due to this topic being excessively long, a new 2024 "New Shops in Dulwich / Peckham" has been opened here. Please continue the discussion there.

Really impressed by Mr Bao in Peckham. Apparently it's been open six weeks and has replaced a shoe shop, which I don't remember every seeing.

Had lunch there on Saturday.

Had their equivalent of the Full English, only spicy. It was absolutely delicious, especially the beans, and great value for money.

We will be working our way through their (quite short) menu over the coming weeks, and then (probably) starting again :))

The staff were really lovely as well.

Thank you to South East London Journal's review of it, as we'd never have thought of going there otherwise.

We also put our heads round the door of John the Unicorn. Interesting decor :)

Daughter and I went out researching somewhere to go and eat around Peckham and Nunhead for Mothers Day, cruising drive-by fashion and doing rough head-counts. All eateries were literally heaving with people: Mr. Bao, Pedlers, Artusi, Peckham Bazaar. People were queuing outside Pedlers.

It's good that there are so many places to eat in Peckham, seems like the place to be at the moment. Hope they all continue to do well.

Same here.

Getting a bit bored with same old same old Saturday lunch options in ED.

Pecknam drive-bys are not what one might expect nowadays

Was at Peddler weekend before last-- its great. There is a wave of new openings in Peckham that are giving the area an extra kick and buzz. I've been going out there a lot in recent months to try all the new places.

While they are all good, with only a few exceptions, I wouldn't say there are that many I would break my neck to head back to rather that eating in ED but its nice to have a change :)

Besides the revamped Indian place and Meat Liquor, new openings aren't on the horizon in ED for a while, which is fine. It's all swings and roundabouts.

Went to Peddler for Mother's day, booked about three weeks in advance, totally delish Sunday roast and not more expensive than a lot of the pub lunch offerings.

was in Artusi in Bellenden Road last night (I don't go out like this all the time - had a visiting relative) and they rustled up a veggie dish for me which was sublime.

I am always amazed at the number of people who seem to be eating out these days...

I eat out in the evenings occasionally .. Mostly Curry..

.. But Breakfast... Brunch.. Lunch.. Afternoon Tea.. ?? Does anybody ever cook these days...

I simply do not have time to eat out.. Travelling to Camberwell, Peckham, Forest Hill for a Coffee and a Croissant..

Cooking is Fun.. More people need to try it..

Foxy

What's to say the person you see having (shock horror) afternoon tea in a cafe doesn't cook breakfast, lunch and dinner at home 7 days a week? Or the person having lunch is eating out for the first time in months? Bizarre conclusion to make. People could say the same if they see you sitting in a curry house!

Always good to be chastised for eating out too much and not cooking enough.. by someone who has spent the better part of every week eating out and not cooking.. for four decades!

Well back then I was working 12-13 hour shifts including Nights and week ends.. I ate out late after work...

I did not sit in cafes at breakfast or lunchtime..

Since leaving employment in 2008 I don't have the money to eat out as much..

Also After being diagnosed with Type-2 Diabetes in Feb 2011 I need to take more control of what I eat.

Years of eating out late at night... ready meals when working nights... irregular meals when working shifts

had taken its toll.

Foxy

Well Mr Fox I can only go on the post you wrote in 2013 (not, strangely, five years prior - in 2008) where you wrote that you eat in restaurants 3-4 times a week and have done for 40 years.

Let's hear more about new shops and restaurants in Dulwich and Peckham and have less of this nonsense.

Eating out is (mostly) a pleasure.

Spending hours shopping, preparing and cooking something at home which is devoured in a fraction of the time it took to make and then leaves a mound of washing up or stuff to load the dishwasher with is not much of a pleasure for me, except when I have visitors.

Well it's both...

I don't have the money to go out eating in East Dulwich 3-4 times a week and don't have the time to travel elsewhere

where it may be a bit cheaper.. Also I hate sitting in restaurants for hours at a time.

I like to sit down.. eat my food.. and get out.. There are far more immportant things that need doing..

I've always been a lazy eater... I eat purely out of nescessity... I'm not a foody as such.. Food is a real chore for me. I simply cannot be bothered..

As least when I eat at home I can be doing other things while it is in the oven..

And as for *bob* comments on my eating habits over the last 40 years .. Well they were over along period

and for the majority of that period it was true.. I have slowed down now in the same way I no longer drink

6-8 pints of beer a day as I might of down at times during the same period..

FFS.. Pedants.. :)

People who have nothing else in their lives..

Foxy

But it's ok to go to the pub every night DulwichFox? Does this differ in your mind to people that go to restaurants/cafes to socialise with others?

"It's a bit boring being in all day apart from shopping and hour or so's walk and then having to stay in in the evening.

Home alone.. For a month.. I'm used to being out every night. I'll probably go insane.. but my liver would of recovered.

Foxy.."
