Bloody ‘Poundland’ on Lordship Lane! Another deathknell for the independents. What a shame that what made East Dulwich special is swiftly becoming like every other high street. Really sad for the neighbourhood

Years ago, this was a Woolworths. After that, it became a Job Centre. It’s never been a ‘Independent shop’ in my long memory is being born and raised in East Dulwich. Also, as others have said, it’s replacing a chain, a estate agent chain at that,

Maybe for some people, what makes a high street ‘special’, is out pricing normal folk so they can’t shop there anymore. In a cost of living crisis, Poundland is a god send for many, especially elderly people and those on benefits or a small fixed income.

I’m sure the yuppies will find a whole plethora of overpriced tat elsewhere on the lane. How about letting normal ED’ers have a place to buy too?

Louisa.

Most of the footprints of LL shops are too small for chains - the (former) Foxton's site was an exception. Hence we had to lose one chain grocer (Iceland) to get another (M&S). Where the big chains are now are virtually the only LL slots which would be suitable for High Street chains (and even then they are actually small) - one of the reasons we have never had a Waitrose, despite the ED demographic now being very suitable.

If you are worried about more (rather than different) 'High St.' chain stores coming into LL, don't be. Chain restaurants yes, possibly. But not chain stores.

Meanwhile, Walter's opposite has closed temporarily - they were burgled with equipment stolen. There was also a burglary at the hairdressers a few doors down. :(

As an update: Walter's has now closed permanently. The landlord (Dulwich Estate) has retaken possession of the premises. As the operators' note says, the burglaries must have been a huge blow, but there were other problems too. It's a shame as it was very well-reviewed by Jay Rayner.

Also: initial reports indicate that a suspect in the shop burglaries in W Dulwich and Dulwich Village has been arrested, charged and even convicted and sentenced(?!?) in the last few days.

indeed - I saw a forwarded message from the local Safer Neighbourhood Team that said

"A burglar responsible for recent commercial burglaries was arrested by AS officers caught red handed last week. He was remanded in custody and taken straight to court and was sentenced for the offences."

  • 2 weeks later...

Another coffee shop opening . bang across the road facing nero's

Sounds like a coffee shop crawl is becoming more feasible. Its like a pub crawl except you drink coffee not beer and rather than getting drunk and tired as the crawl goes on you end up zippy and awake.

Does anyone know what is going into that space on East Dulwich Road right next to the Goose Green playground? They are kitting it out and it's looking nice.

It used to be Aneto then a short-lived Brougham (sp?) after that...

Yet there is only one coffee shop in the small Sainsbury's end of Lordship Lane and that mainly does food and other things. Yet there is going to be another Chippy, despite there being Sema's, Emily's Place and Sea Master already pretty close by.

Baffling stuff.

Christ Church has a cafe (Bread of Life) which is opened each weekday - times are on the door. Much cheaper than Harry's.

New fish and chip shop is reportedly expensive £14 50 for cod and chips. Not sure what else is on the menu.

People this end of LL and Barry have frequently moaned about the lack of chippies - Nearest is opposite Grove Tavern.

The builders working there said it is going to be a bar and restaurant serving Indian food.
