Here's a few for you:

On the junction of Upland Road and Crystal Palace Road is a large well-protected house, with huge gates, anti-climb fencing and reflective windows. It has no identifier apart from the sign 'HAZCHEM' on the hefty front door. Is there any substance to the rumour it's an MI5 safe-house? B)

On the corner of Friern Road and Peckham Rye is a large upraised area populated by around 200 tiny concrete chimneys. Is it true that each of these is the sole entrance to a 4x4 cell designed specifically to house people who cheat in online best bar polls?

At 238 Peckham Rye is an attractive double-fronted family home where all the windows have been senselessly bricked up. It also smells slightly of poo. Is it possible that this is the new home for East Dulwich's very own Miss Whiplash, and is well frequented as a local crack den for MPs?

As you can tell, I need these questions resolved urgently... ;-)

No - it is where Osama Bin Laden is staying whilst Tony has our boys in Afghanistan.

You are right on the other two.

Ermm - not sure: the large house on the opposite corner to Uplands Pub and Plantnation (North East/Peckham side of the junction).

Wholesale hairdressing supplies?? Bah! Hardly seems worth the level of protection they've got. Are you sure you're not part of the conspiracy? Have you had visitors late at night?

That would still leave the chimneys and the bricked-up house... ;-)

I know it's around there, but it might not be the same place. I'll have a look next time I'm down that way.

Those chimneys have got me baffled too - although until I came here I'd always imagined they were pilings/foundations for something to sit on that was never built.

Inbetween them and the bricked-up house is that crumbling old building that looks like it was a school. Perhaps they're all connected somehow? The whole area looks like it's ripe for demolition and rebuilding.

The chimneys are not chimneys. The site used to house some kind of academy/scholl which consisted of a whole load to portakabin type buildings. They used to sit on the little raised concrete things - prob to obtain a level surface.

The salon supply building is completely different from the one opposites Uplands. It is up by the CPT and does exactly what its says on the sign.

The building opposite Uplands I was told by Haart, was a regional office for the Special Branch.

Im sure you are all aware of the colourful history of the local ED based plod and their mass involvment & subsequent prosecution for the supply of controlled substances back in the late 1990's ? then again, I doubt many of the posters on here were residents at the time .

With regard to the Upland question, ratehr than pontificate on the board, just go up and knock on the door - policemen are public servants and you, as a member of the public, should be able to take them to task and demand answers. you do pay their wages after all.

  • 9 months later...

Not an anonymous building, but a building with secret responsibilities...

I understand that High Wood was part of a chain of buildings that would be used if London came under nuclear threat/attack.

The military were to use it as a base for their operations to put a cordon around central London to stop the civil population fleeing.

I believe there is further information in this book: "London Under Attack : the report of the Greater London Area War

Risk Study"

I though it a little optimistic to expect that the military wouldn't try to leave London too.

Ah look, one of my first ever posts, not even registered yet. *sniff* You get such little time with them before they're up and running.

If we're talking about the same place, that building used to be East Dulwich Police Station. I've often wondered what it's used for now.

Yeah, they must really grant a lot of firearm licences in the South East London area. Do you think those idiots who shot that young woman in New Cross, last night, had a gun licence?

Probably not although I'm not sure how or why you've made the link between licensed firearms and last nights shooting.

Care to enlighten me?

Point being, they can't be issuing too many licences in SE London, as the majority of guns that are carried are unlicenced.

    • The top front tooth has popped out.  Attempted to fix myself with repair kit bought from Boots, unfortunately it didn’t last long.  Tooth has popped out again.  Unable to get to dentist as housebound but family member can drop off.  I tried dental practice I found online, which is near Goose Green, but the number is disconnected.   The new dental practice in FH (where Barclays used to be) said it’s not something they do.  Seen a mobile dental practice where a technician comes to your home and does the repair but I’m worried about the cost. Any suggestions please? Thank you
    • So its OK for Starmer to earn £74K/annum by renting out a property, cat calling the kettle black....... Their gravy train trundles on. When the Southport story that involves Starmer finally comes out, he's going to be gone, plus that and the local elections in May 2025 when Liebour will get a drumming. Even his own MP's have had enough of the mess they've made of things in the first three months of being in power. They had fourteen years to plan for this, what a mess they've created so quickly, couldn't plan there way out of a paper bag.   Suggest you do the sums, the minimum wage won't  be so minimum when it is introduced, that and the increase in employers national insurance contributions is why so many employers are talking about reducing their cohort of employees and closing shops and businesses.  Businesses don't run at a loss and when they do they close, its the only option for them, you can only absorb a loss for so long before brining the shutters down and closing the doors. Some people are so blinkered they think the sun shines out of the three stooges, you need to wake up soon. Because wait till there are food shortages, no bread or fresh vegetables, nor meat in the shops, bare shelves in the supermarkets because the farmers will make it happen, plus prices spiralling out of control as a result of a supply and demand market. Every ones going to get on the gravy train and put their prices up, It happened before during lockdown, nothing to stop it happening again. You don't shoot the hand that feeds you. Then you'll see people getting angry and an uprising start to happen.  Hungry people become angry people very quickly.
    • Eh? Straight ahead of what?  If you turn left at Goose Green, as you also posted above, you end up at the library. Then the Grove. Then, unless you turn right at the South Circular, you end up at Forest Hill!
    • yes I’ve spotted this too — it’s near me and I’m very intrigued to see what it’ll be 👀👀👀👀
