New signs for old

All the street name signs in the area have been replaced. My simple question is why? What was wrong with the old ones?

I think it all happened last summer but my unobservant self has only just noticed the extent of the replacement. It's especially noticable on the walls of painted houses that have the signs attached. There is now an unpainted patch due to the new signs being a different shape.

..I doubt that anything is WRONG with them but the budgets for FY 2006 will have just closed in March so the Southwark Street Furniture or Urban Stylists (?!) will have needed to have spent their budget in order to ensure that they get at least the same plus an estimated 10% for the next financial year. Why wait till signs need replacing / speed bumps added / pavements re-dug up and re-tarmacced- that would just be to practical...
